I keep forgetting to post this, but here is my Yemenite oc Liron!
This is my original character, Liron. She is a Yemenite Jew and this piece is exploring her cultural heritage. I have always wanted to learn more about Yemenite culture, I learned the trope for my bat mitzvah and those who have tutored and mentored me have been such role models in my life, I dedicate this character to them. This project was about a year in the making between off and on concepts, research, interviewing, and drawing. This is now my longest to finish, but also most detailed and rich piece I've made so far. There are so many components I tried to include in here. The bottom right headdress is called a gargush and it is what Yemenite women would wear as traditional dress, the pattern in the background is a common Yemenite design for the gargush. The food is jachnoon and it is traditionally eaten with eggs, crushed tomatoes and zhug, a spicy green dressing. The outfit on the left includes a hirz amulet, along with other Yemenite jewelry. The picture frame in the top left is inspired by a lot of Israeli prayer art with the double border and designs in the middle. I included pomegranates, an iconic Israeli fruit, palm leaves and a subtle design of a sudra pattern, an ancient Jewish head covering. She is smoking hookah, which is a popular activity. Her name is both in English and in cursive Hebrew.

I'm a non-Christian and it has never occurred to me that wearing an ugly jumper has anything at all to do with religion. It's just, depending on your view, a bit of fun, or a cynical capitalist ploy to get people to buy unnecessary shit jumpers.
