an eternal afterlife of suffering will not undo the suffering they cause. I've never much cared for the reassurance of eventual justice that the victims never get to have. All it tells me is to not expect justice in this life.

Religion is the excuse, not the culprit. Atheism isn't a magic cure-all for anti-intellectualism, tribalism, nationalism, etc. Add to that, strict anti-religion nations like China are hardly fascism or problem free.
