We do get per-crate granular caching in crate2nix (which is its main advantage over, e.g., crane or nixpkgs' buildRustPackage). Unfortunately it doesn't yet support LTO.

Happily using Nix for that in a polyglot monorepo of Rust, Go, Node and Python (through crate2nix, gomod2nix, yarnpnp2nix and uv2nix)

There are a few things I'd really like to see (refs/pr/, git-lfs) but other than that it's *perfect* for nixpkgs development.

You're not alone. 😭 Wish we had a European alternative that comes close. There were some suggestions on Mastodon but I yet have to check them out properly.

Highly appreciate that you took the time to write all of this down in such a thorough and clear-headed manner. For us outsiders it was very hard to judge what exactly is going on, precisely for the points laid out.
