Of course, although I think the 6am run in the dark pre-work is a very UK/US work culture thing. Like Tesco meal deals etc.

People don't drive in London. Where I grew up in the North West, we all got our driving licences as early as possible. I've got friends in their mid-30s who grew up in London who never learned how to drive and have never driven a car.

There are some (well, if you class 40 dollars month plus a joining fee as cheap) but they're not a 15 minute walk away in most neighbourhoods like they are in Moscow.

In these journals? Original stuff. The only reason they have a few translated articles in NLO is because its a reflection on Katerina Clark's life and work. Generally, the journals are all original works. You can read most for free online - www.nlobooks.ru/magazines/no... - magazines.gorky.media

The Moscow literary scene has take a hit over the last few years but it's still much more active than anything I have seen in London, where we have, what, the LRB and the NLR. In New York it's a bit broader, the New Yorker, NY Mag, Baffler, NYRB etc. But Moscow still outshines.

try Бывшая Ленина, I really enjoyed it. Also Бюро проверки is great.

These journals are publishing very high quality stuff -- such as an original reflection by Shiela Fitzpatrick on Katerina Clark -- up to 450 pages per edition six times a year for 260 roubles (USD 3.37). It's incredible and they have the same production quality as books.

It's quite a strange death of the area. It was once the cool place to be, became oversaturated, lost its sheen and lost the cool rich kids who used to go to bars and restaurants there. Now all that remains are empty overpriced restaurants which all look the same.

Not personally, and certainly not with taxis or deliveries. But I did hear from a friend who lives in the Oblast that a couple of petrol stations nearby were closed for a few hours. It didn't stop him or anyone getting fuel, they just had to drive a few km to a different petrol station.
