The headwaters of the Jukskei River in Bertrams. The river is edged by boulders. Some have symbols drawn in white paint, like a cross and an ankh. The Vaal Dam wall at dusk. Given that more leaked water flows in the Jukskei River than naturally occurring water, it could be argued that the true source of the Jukskei is Katse Dam in Lesotho. Johannesburg receives all of its drinking water from the Vaal Dam, and the major source of the water in the Vaal Dam is Katse Dam. A hadeda stands on the edge of a spruit with murky brown water and heaps of trash on the banks. There are spruits in Johannesburg like this one near Tembisa that reportedly stop flowing when the municipal water supply is shut off.
