THAT'S also a big reason why he was so pissed off at the start of Season 2. He's mad that he LET himself get too close to people at the hotel. Close enough that he was willing to fight a war for them. His near death experience made him realise he considered them friends. And that wouldn't do!

He was ABSOLUTELY Vox's friend. You cannot tell me those two didn't constantly hang out at bars and enjoy each others company.
