A big shout out to my amazing collaborators in this project, Patrick Heidbreder, Marjolein Bruijning, Patrick G. Meirmans, Sean Stankowski, and especially to Jonna Kulmuni ☺️🎉

Please share widely. 😃

(3) Hybrids have also expanded 200 km northwards coinciding with the expansion of climatic conditions suitable for hybrids.

Our results suggest that hybrids perform better under warming climates than their cold-adapted parent, and that recent climatic changes can lead to range expansion of hybrids.

(2) Hybrids have a higher genomic diversity & are active earlier in the season than its cold-adapted parent. Further, hybrid offspring emerge earlier in the season.
Hybrids also withstand acute heat better than F. aquilonia.
These results suggest a competitive advantage of hybrids over F. aquilonia.

At the moment, I am mainly doing fieldwork. Below, I share some impressions from fieldwork across various European countries

A little late, but I still want to share the good news 🎊: I recently started my #MSCA postdoctoral fellowship. I will assess the impact of climate change on wood ants🐜 & their hybrids 🧬. My project is based at the Uni #Amsterdam with Jonna Kulmuni & @dickmerrill.bsky.social @lmumuenchen.bsky.social

Last day of #eseb2025 will kick off in a few moments with the plenary talk by Prof. Johanna Mappes from @helsinki.fi
"Signals of Survival: The Genetics and Ecology of Looking Dangerous"

Last #eseb2025 poster session has just started 🎊
krapfpatrick.bsky.social
Are you interested in ants 🐜 and/or hybridisation 🧬 and/or the impact of climate change on them?

Then come to my talk this afternoon at 15:15, room 120-121 in S30 - Genomic insights into evolutionary adaptation and species movements in a changing climate.
krapfpatrick.bsky.social
Are you interested in the impact of climate change on hybrids, come to my talk on Thursday, 21.08, at 15:15 (S30), meeting room 120-121.

"Implications of expanding hybrid wood ant populations on heat tolerance and phenology under climate change"

Thanks to #MSCA and #EU for funding my project. 🎊

Every day, I read to many bad news. I now decised to post something postive here every (other) day.
I came across this beautiful meadow with daffodils and cherry blossoms last Saturday.

Gestern habe ich Europas 1. Solar-Radweg besucht.

🧪 I want to set up a teaching unit in a genetics course where we use sourdough starters to learn about evolution, sequencing, and diversity. Has anyone done that and can share experience, pitfalls, materials? The genetics undergrad course spans a full semester, we have a bit of time for culture!
