Black women are literally and figuratively the blueprint. What wonders could we accomplish if black women were properly given our due respect. Perhaps there’s a reason so many try so hard in so many ways to undermine our voices.

Today I’m featuring another Kentuckian. Alberta Odell Jones was the first black woman to pass the Kentucky Bar paving the way for my friends and I. We can only imagine as to what all she may have accomplished had her life not been taken far too soon.

Ruby Bridges was born the same year as my mom. Too many like to behave as though the Civil Rights Movement is ancient history. We stand on the precipice of those rights being in danger. Please know that both Ms. Bridges and my mother are still alive today.

I have walked into the palaces of kings and queens and into the houses of presidents. And much more. But I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad.

Today I’m sharing another amazing Kentuckian. For those of you who are truly seeking out opportunities to learn and to challenge yourself to begin to understand those who are different from you, I urge you to read bell hooks. She will expand your mind.

Folks are now talking about this amazing woman and prophetess. Please if you are interested in her writing then read all of it. It’s worth your time. My favorite is “Lilith’s Brood” and my favorite quote is:

“Drowning people die fighting their rescuers.” An apropos quote.

I fell in love with her book “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and couldn’t even begin to tell you how many times I read that book. Zora Neale Hurston was a woman before her time and this world is hard on women who break the mold.

Today’s post is for me. I have loved Mariah Carey since my bestie Yolonda told me to check out the video for “Vision of Love” because she’s a mixed girl like us. Those of you who understand know Representation Matters.

This month as I’m featuring inspirational black women, it’s important for me to also include inspirational black women from the state of Kentucky. My black roots go deep in Kentucky. Today I’m honoring Georgia Davis Powers, the first black woman to hold a seat in the Kentucky State Senate.
