Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.

This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

They can’t possibly take all of us, though. I don’t see how the math works out.

Also, I don’t particularly *want* to let them win, uproot everything to flee in the night, esp when others can’t. But also I know enough about S.Am. history in the 1970s to have gone through the thought experiment.

People might think that whatever destruction is done to science in the US, we can undo in 4 years with a Democratic president and Congress.

The problem is that many areas require specialized knowledge and skills built up over years, and once that's lost, it's hard to get back.

The damage will be far worse than just a 4-yr gap. Both I and the individual who has managed this site for most of the past 50 yrs are retiring within the next 2 years. With this closure, we will not be able to plan a transition.

We have an Ioniq 6 and love it! We can make it from the Bay Area to SoCal with 1 charge if you‘re real careful about it (2 stops and it‘s extremely comfortable margins/or if going up a mountain).
