There may be a connection between this festival and other celebrations of the dísir (collective female ancestral beings), the Matronae (a trio of female beings attested by altar and votive inscriptions), and Yule.

It continued to be associated with the Christmas season. During the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, Christmas was a time of parties, drinking, gambling, and feasting; so much so that Puritan Christians banned Christmas celebrations in Britain and in early America.

Perhaps the most important Amendments are the 9th and 10th, which state that all powers not specifically granted to the Federal Government by the Constitution are to be held by the States or the People. In other words, the Constitution serves to limit on the rights of the government, not the people.

As an interesting side note, this one of the reasons why it is perfectly appropriate for Christians to say #HappyHolidays this time of year, rather than simply #MerryChristmas, as this is one of the many Holy Days that occur during the season that are NOT Christmas.

A deeper layer of unpleasantness to this story is the fact that the butcher is often depicted as being Jewish, playing into antisemitic tropes. Such ideas have been around for literally centuries and are still going strong and can be seen in conspiracy theories on the internet today.

In the story, an evil butcher kills three children, and puts them in a barrel of pickling salt, intending to chop them up and sell them. St. Nicholas, however, saves the children and resurrects them.

In many artworks, (such as the image above from a Flemish ‘Book of Hours’ from the 1400s) St. Nicholas is shown with 3 young children in a barrel. This is reference to one of the more grim stories about “Jolly old St. Nick;” a story that was never-the-less very popular.
