Ah, it's the city's annual "fuck you" to pedestrians. Still no "Windrow blocking crosswalk" in the 311 app's "windrow blocking..." dropdown menu.

Here's my city's 'network' of protected bike lanes (not shared with cars or pedestrians). There's obviously a lot more work to be done, but lately we've tended to build mostly multiuse paths (widened sidewalks, shared with pedestrians) instead of safe, dedicated active transportation infrastructure.

Finally feel like doing something with some of the random parts that seemed interesting at the time and have been hanging around my desk for more than a year. I want to make a tiny pico-powered ebook reader. Would sure be nice if the $12, 5cm² micro-sd card breakout didn't cost $18 to ship.

New Box Day is a great day for Pouneh.

Came across this #yeg ad bragging about their new "AI-powered Safety Codes Inspection Efficiency program". The city website is light on details, but I find it hard to think of a worse use for AI than *deciding whether new buildings need a safety inspection*. WTAF.

Well done, Wîhkwêntôwin, for pushing for better bike options in neighbourhood renewal. Fingers crossed that the draft design will be good once we finally get it.

Massive rallies are happening. The premier's phone line is auto-disconnecting because of the sheer volume of demands to repeal the bill (not that she cares, she's fucked off to Saudi Arabia).

Teachers are still going back tomorrow under the same bad terms that they've already rejected twice.

Progress on the 113 St wide sidewalk. It's got a long way still to go.

Kiddo's new mask stickers are very cute.

Hazelnuts. Last year's crop was about 6 nuts, so I'm thrilled with this. Now to decide what recipe is worthy of them...

We actually do bus students from their home neighbourhoods quite far around the city - special programs split the city up into a relatively small number of zones, and kids can get bussing for the special program in their zone. Inefficient for sure, but I'm not sure what a better option would be.

You went through a few in your video. They're not good for pedestrians because they enable drivers to drive faster through turns, and drivers are usually looking for oncoming cars behind them instead of peds/cyclists in the sliplane. We shouldn't have them at all, but especially not on a bike route.

Behold, 3/4 of the kiwi harvest! Not sure if I'll be able to get through it all.

It's great for my kid (he had a Flomask earlier but outgrew it, and the Vitacore masks have never been a great fit for his face). The frame is very lightweight, and the clothlike seal is super comfortable.
I put elastic+toggle on the earloop to not get lost at recess, & rub-on transfers for fun.

And, because this is Edmonton: The new lanes will be wide enough for a car to comfortably park in them, whee! Hope we get some good barriers at the entrances.
August 2, 2025 at 2:23 AM
Same problem at the intersection of 113 St and 110 Ave. The car lane really can't be narrowed any more, and curb bumpouts further reduce the available space, but I'm not sure why they chose to dramatically narrow the bike lane instead of the barrier. The barrier's going to be wider than the lane.
August 2, 2025 at 2:20 AM
Strange: On the south side of the 113 St and 106 Ave intersection, they've left a massively wide car road and kept the bike lane straight, which with the curb bumpout means an extremely narrow entrance to the bike lane. Estimated width ~1.75m. Design standards recommended lower limit: 2.5m.
August 2, 2025 at 2:16 AM
Not so good: I'm not sure why such a very long stretch of bike lane needs to be unprotected after the driveway.
August 2, 2025 at 2:10 AM
113 Ave protected bike lane: Lots of good stuff, some odd. The good: It looks like we're getting proper wide buffers, and they're being widened to shorten the crossing distance at a crosswalk to an elementary school, and to narrow the car lane on the north side of the intersection with 106 Ave.
August 2, 2025 at 2:06 AM
113 St shared-use path between Kingsway and 111 Ave: Portapotty and markers placed, no construction.
August 2, 2025 at 1:54 AM
No problem. 111 Ave: flags, no construction. The service road is supposed to become a 'local street bikeway', but I'm not sure what infrastructure is scheduled to be built there.

@growtogetheryeg.bsky.social another McMansion owner is Very Concerned About Neighbourhood Character. This one's in Glenora, so... at least I'm not surprised?

Edmonton: violates their own policy on genAI usage by publishing a public-facing genAI image in an ad.

Edmonton communications department, when called out: "Reddit is whining, but we *really* wanted to use it, and it's so great, it must be fine! Your feedback is important to us."
