So today! Headed to Takoma Beverage Company after dropping C at day off camp for a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin (top fall treat IMHO) & @mgardnerkelly.bsky.social ’s “Dividing the Public.” I’m teaching a new class (Intergovernmental Relations in Education) and trying to get ahead of syllabus prep 🙌🏻

Friday morning with @elizabethkai.bsky.social’s classic “From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime,” and a guava rose cruffin (?!?) from Lost Sock Coffee in Takoma. Trying to actually *finish* some of the books I’ve started this year. (Also, incredibly relevant piece of history).

I couldn't miss #indiebookstoreday just bc I was in Denver for #AERA25! I went to the Shop at MATTER and LOVED it - incredibly friendly staff, impeccable vibes, and impressive selection. I picked up @roxanegay.bsky.social's feminist reader, Anarchism and the Black Revolution, & a kid's book for M.

Spending today at the “Empowered Through Research: Youth Advocacy and Research Convening” organized by DMV area youth (supported by @bethanymonea.bsky.social) engaged in participatory action research and advocacy. 10/10 recommend spending time around young people to inspire & motivate you ✊🏻

If you're in the DC area, stop by @peoplesbooktakoma.com. It's a bright, cheerful store w/ an amazing selection of (especially non-fiction!) books (and zines!) & incredibly kind, helpful folks. I stopped by post haircut today and found this book on Lefebvre's theories of social space & the urban. 🙌🏼

Such a treat to attend @curlyprofessor.bsky.social’s talk on her new book “Carceral Apartheid” at Politics and Prose this afternoon. I appreciate her ending on an “invitation to awakening.” Anyone interested in prisons and PIC abolition should absolutely check it out.

Grateful that @davidkaib.bsky.social picked @city.bsky.social & Leonardo Vilchis book Abolish Rent for the next book club. Learning from LA tenant organizers & housing justice feels especially relevant and necessary in the context of the wildfires. Looking forward to discussing! #BusReads on the G2.

One of the greatest joys of parenting has been watching my son fall in love w/ reading. Today, we got lunch & read books together at a new coffee shop (La Coop in DC): @jeffkinney.bsky.social’s Wrecking Ball Wimpy Kids for him, Reiko Hillyer’s “A Wall is Just a Wall” @dukepress.bsky.social for me 🥰

SO pumped to teach a new class this spring called “Carceral logics, education, and abolition: Disrupting the school to prison nexus.” Reading up as I plan out my syllabus- considering some chapters from @elizabethkai.bsky.social’s book to offer key historical context/framing 🙌🏻

Anyone else on here headed to Boston for #CUFA2024? Looking forward to a (likely, hopefully 😂) invigorating, inspiring few days, especially Kellie Carter Jackson’s keynote.

I was in MA recently for family health stuff. Its been ages since I lived there & forgot what a great bookstore Brookline Booksmith is! I got Percival Everett's "Erasure," Arline Geronimus's "Weathering," & volume one of Angela Davis's "Abolition" collection. What have y'all been reading recently?
