One of the perks of my dad’s job was that children of employees who were in college could work summers in the paper plant. These were union wage jobs, but were physical labor on a 24 hour swing shift. We understood that this is “why you go to college so you don’t have to do these kinds of jobs”.

I used to head a committee at my kids’ elementary school in Oakland, Ca. In order to use a space for evening meetings, we had to fill out a request to the district that had me sign an oath that we wouldn’t be discussing communism…….In 2012.
