definitely! it also helped that they generally had lower production costs. the market for jrpg's on handhelds was especially big in japan. the video addresses this but also points out that a decent number of jrpg series had their final entries on handhelds before dying off
November 6, 2024 at 1:14 AM
ohhh, that makes sense
November 6, 2024 at 1:10 AM
the video says that handhelds were the exception, although it implies that jrpg's move to handhelds signaled their decline overall. the reasoning given is that handhelds were typically reserved for jrpg spin-offs, but during this era a lot of main series entries made their way to handhelds

that makes sense. i'd genuinely be interested in watching a video that delved into those topics. i liked the extensive coverage of game history though
November 5, 2024 at 8:41 AM
out of curiosity, would that make dark souls the exception to the jrpg decline of the era? or was the decline not as pronounced as the video implies?
November 5, 2024 at 8:27 AM
ah, got it! if it's heavily inspired by anime and manga, that would make it a jrpg. also, what would make ff7 rebirth not a jrpg if dark souls isn't?
November 5, 2024 at 8:22 AM
thank you!! were they localized to english or do i have to patch them?
November 5, 2024 at 8:19 AM
i could be totally wrong though. i haven't played dark souls myself, so i'm not saying this from a place of authority. but i understand that it's an rpg
November 5, 2024 at 8:07 AM
i'm genuinely curious though, what's the alternative narrative? it's totally possible that i'm misinformed and the situation's more nuanced
November 5, 2024 at 8:05 AM
i think this definition works because genre boundaries are loose and often include elements from other genres. it's a lot more descriptivist than the prescriptivist definition of statistical games published in japan. lots of jrpg's were produced outside of japan or had staff that weren't japanese
November 5, 2024 at 7:57 AM
i think he was mainly referring to their declined commercial success and lack of innovation. when referring to the jrpg's "golden age," he specifically cites how many creative and out-there games there were. this is why he doesn't consider their recent renewed interest as another golden age
November 5, 2024 at 7:53 AM
the video's definition is pretty clear: jrpg's are statistical games inspired by japanese media. a lot of their identity revolves around inspiration from manga, japanese films, and previous jrpg's. dark souls isn't considered a jrpg because it primarily takes inspiration from western influences

i got one and loaded it with indie games (minecraft, shovel knight, stardew, etc.). it's so nice playing them on a true portable handheld. would love some recommendations though!
