Biggest downside is that it requires some kind of Apple device. Doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest, so if you’re allergic to Macs and iPhones, a cheap old refurb iPad will do. If you weren’t already aware of this, it’s worth a look.

And many more. Way more than I have time to read, but when I find a paywalled link on Bluesky, I can search a couple of keywords in News+ and 80% of the time, I find it. This does not address the larger public access problem, but on an individual level, it gets me around it.
