Today I officially became Mrs. Kylie Falcione (and soon, Dr. Kylie Falcione)

Changing my last name as an academic felt intimidating at first… but it turns out my new name is internet unique. Hopefully this means I'm now SEO-optimized for the job market

🎮 New study: Teen gaming addiction may stem more from pre-existing mental health issues (like anxiety & depression) than from video games themselves.

It is not just about the joystick, but it’s about what’s going on in the mind. 🧠

This summer, 30 brilliant high school students and I explored the effects of digital media on the brain in a course I designed, The Digital Brain 🧠📱

In just one month, they learned MRI, statis in R, media comm, and addiction neuroscience. #commsky

“Why is my teen addicted to video games?”
Our new study in JAMA Network Open shows that psychopathology is a key driver--not an outcome of gaming disorder!
Depression, anxiety, ADHD, and social challenges may underlie gaming disorder.
Treat the root, not just the game. 🎮🧠

@overbye.bsky.social absolutely crushed it at the top paper panel at @icacsab.bsky.social!
She explained everything so clearly — I feel like everyone in that room can now do drift diffusion modeling.
Check out the resources she created to help you get started with DDM (see below)! #ica25

The complete phone bans from school can help teachers and students with consistent policies.
In terms of problematic media use, unless parents are enforcing similar policies at home, we will still see problematic media use -- specifically more craving and mental preoccupation/planning of media use

These new laws are being made too quickly and are having a boomerang effect with students. There needs to be more informed conversations around these policies and must incorporate student voices
