6/And finance was largely removed from the day-to-day realities of the brutality of slavery. Human beings were simply stock to be bought and sold. That the South managed to fight for 4 years speaks more to the Union military's mismanagement than anything else. 💙📚

5/There was no easy alternative in the South at that time. I'm in no way making excuses for slavery, but by the 1860s, war was inevitable. What's most interesting is how similar the 19th century economy was to the 21st century. Financiers in the North were able to act at a distance. 💙📚

4/Very, very much like today, society ran on credit. The only debt-free ppl were either extremely poor or extremely rich (sound familiar?), so even if a slaveholder had a change of heart couldn't free any slaves pledged as collateral, which also meant banks in the North were just as complicit. 💙📚

3/Far from being a "Southern thing", cotton - and therefore slavery - underpinned the US economy. As late as 1850, the "value" of slaves as property was larger than all the railroads. But more insidious, slaves were both currency and credit, South AND North. And here lies an important point. 💙📚

2/Early American scions of wealth - Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie - were hard men who dominated in a world with few laws and even less enforcement. But what makes the book is the best exploration of slavery, its place in the early US economy, and the inevitability of the war that I've read. 💙📚

It may very well be! From what I understand, "hasst" (with 2 S's) is "hate", while "hast" does roughly translate to "have" or something like it. But if there's one thing Germans are known for, it's wacky wordplay lol 😜

Who would have guessed "Du Hast" was a song about...*checks notes* marriage?? Ah. Er, hmm. 🤔
Given the lack of reliable Internet lyric sites in the late 90s, I spent 2 decades believing "hast" was "hate", when in reality it's "have".
Although, "you hate me" in a song about marriage works too. 😜

2/I've had some real successes teaching employees how to use AI to save themselves time, which is ultimately good for the company's bottom line. It's not John Henry vs. the machine, it's giving John Henry a machine of his own to do the work of 5 steam drivers and STILL be home in time for dinner.
