Mystery solved!!
For many years this textbook cover haunted me. No molecules look like, do they? (The book doesn't offer any explanation, i checked.)
But, maybe was trying to teach us about the intrinsic structure of metal organic frameworks.

What was it like to see Rubin’s first images? It was gratifying to see something so beautiful. As a scientist, I usually look at data that contains this information, but it’s quite a different thing to actually see it with your own eyes — the gorgeous color and high dimensionality. It just blows people’s minds, including mine. I basically took my scientist hat off and looked at it from a child’s point of view

I think most books don't need endnotes or footnotes. Usually they serve the author far more than the reader. When I wrote The Laughing Baby I avoided both. It was hard work but made a better book.
A Note About Scientific References Throughout the book I try to give credit where credit is due. Science is a collaborative and cumulative exercise. Isaac Newton famously declared in 1675: ‘If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.’ Scientific progress happens through evolution. Revolutions in science rarely throw away what came before ; more likely they refine it. We argue about the details, but we are all working on the same big picture. Only a minority of the research in this book is my own and I rarely give more than a summary. It is important to credit the people who did the work and point out where to find the full, original versions. Popular science books often hide this information in footnotes or endnotes, or omit it entirely. I prefer to use the convention adopted by psychology journals. When referring to a study you give the names of the authors and the year of the publication like this: (Author & Author, year). For example, one early work on happy babies was written by Charles Darwin. ‘A biographical...
