Very happy with this article, it’s been a long time coming: www.prospectslive.com/a-new-angle-...
A New Angle on UCLs
Last year, 59 pitchers endured Tommy John surgery, and 140 suffered elbow woes. Baseball is in the middle of an injury crisis. Is there anything we can do about it?

I’ve become increasingly radicalized on AI—it’s the most for no one product I’ve ever seen. If you’re using it, it almost certainly is hurting you more than helping.

Who would win? The best manager of all time in world football, or a bunch of Totty boys who are mates? COYS 🤷‍♂️

Tottenham by the power of friendship?

Have to give @prospectslive.bsky.social kudos for the best trade deadline retrospective I’ve ever read. Nobody does it like them.

@skykalkman.bsky.social Who do you think got the best change of scenery at the deadline? Jax? Sears? Sneaky de Vries?
August 1, 2025 at 6:55 PM
Do we think Sears might be able to add a cutter in SD and evolve into his final form? Just seems like an opportune moment for a new voice to come at.

Lowkey kinda like the Astros moves this deadline, especially if they manage another pitcher acquisition.

Anyone have thoughts about the study showing “AI” made coders slower even though they thought they were faster? I know a lot of people who say it’s useful to them exactly because of speed—are we still confident in those self-assessments?

Behold, my ten-minute swing metric, I call it Swing Dunce.
This one is for everyone who says, "Why don't we have swing+ yet, it's easy, just do machine learning on it," or whatever.

Sorry swing metrics, Spurs have won a trophy and I care about nothing else #COYS

Wow, massive MSE loss here 😂

Attack Angle vs. wOBA 2024: 0 r^2

lmao

Might mess around today and make the worst swing+ you’ll see

Nottingham Forest are the biggest overperformer in the Premier League. What are the keys to their success?

This is my hot take, thank you for coming to my TED talk
March 25, 2025 at 5:58 PM
Okay, I got distracted by baseball again. Prompted by the talk we always get this time of year over TJ honeymoons, I did some research. Bottom line? It seems to be real. Elbow injury rate in the return year for TJ recipients was around 10%, down from around 20% in the total population.

the pitching injury crisis in one plot...

elbow varus torque that exceeds "the failure limit of the elbow joint" is strongly associated with UCL damage

but more elbow varus torque = more velocity

@enosarris.bsky.social belated thanks for the shoutout on the pod/article!

Me, rabid: Is OOPSY running on the new Stuff+!? I must know if Corbin Burnes is 3% better than I thought!!
February 5, 2025 at 9:03 PM
Okay, with the data I have right now, pretty convinced there's no noticeable signal. With only looking at pitchers going long outings, with a distribution of gaps that match qualified starters well, all the ways I tried to sort... naive is almost the same (Chi^2 of .905 with 5 degrees of freedom).
January 30, 2025 at 1:21 AM
Here are a few things I’ll be trying to add this evening to open up a bigger sample on velo gaps, and add other factors to see if they have an effect in conjunction:

-Pitches per outing (captures long relievers too, hopefully larger sample)
-Max Velo raw (throw hard, need more gap?)
(1/2)

I have decided that OOPSY is my projections god now, which is a good and normal thing to do.
January 26, 2025 at 10:30 PM
I added more context and reran things a few times... same trend. We're now looking at all lower arm injuries within a year vs. velocity gap. It certainly doesn't look like the trend I'd expect. Player seasons from statcast, injury data from @fangraphs.com
January 22, 2025 at 5:16 PM
I have a lot more left to do (factors to add, more years of data), but uhhhh... I can't say I really understand this plot, and I made it. (I am a little delirious from school, so I allow there might be a dumb mistake(s) here.)
