Where populists seek division, there is remarkable nuance and agreement. They want lower net migration, even though they are clear-eyed about the positive benefits - not least on the benefits of highly skilled migration where there is a labour shortage.

The public is united in wanting to reduce migration. On the left, even a plurality of Green voters want to see net migration come down substantially. On the right, even Reform voters would rather see visas issued to sustain our social care sector – if the alternative is taxes going up.
