Opposition Lords are STILL voting to water down key measures in the Employment Rights Bill - risking delaying rights like access to Sick Pay from Day 1.
The Lords must get out of the way and let the Bill pass, so we can deliver the new rights working people need.

HIGHLIGHTS: Yesterday, Labour MPs stood firm to vote down Conservative and Lib Dem amendments that would water down the landmark Employment Rights Bill. See the highlights here 👇

So what happened with the Big Votes in the Lords on the Employment Rights Bill?

Unelected Tory and Lib Dem Lords passed amendments that undermine Labour's Manifesto - on Day 1 rights, Guaranteed Hours and Repealing the TU Act

Over to MPs now, to stand up for workers & their mandate from the public
October 29, 2025 at 3:52 PM
Tory and Lib Dem Lords have voted to SCRAP Labour's new protections against being unfairly sacked from day one, meaning workers must wait 6 months for this to happen.

But this isn't over. When the Employment Rights Bill returns to the Commons, MPs can safeguard day one unfair dismissal protections.
October 28, 2025 at 6:22 PM
They’re back at it again - the Tories and Lib Dems have worked hand in hand in the Lords to smash loopholes in Labour’s right for everyone to have a guaranteed hours contract.

They're siding with bad bosses over workers. Now over to the Commons to make sure working people get the rights they need.

Last year Labour were elected with a mandate for CHANGE – and their commitment to strengthening employment rights with the New Deal for Working People was spelled out in the Manifesto.

It’s time for unelected Tory and Lib Dem Lords to get out of the way, and stop blocking key manifesto commitments.
October 28, 2025 at 5:39 PM
And it wouldn’t be the Tories without an attack on the right to strike – undermining Labour’s Manifesto commitment to repeal the 2016 Act by retaining the 50% turnout threshold

No other organisations are have turnout thresholds, and you don’t improve industrial relations by undermining union rights
October 28, 2025 at 5:39 PM
There’s also a Crossbench amendment, backed by the Tories last time, to unpick the 2016 commitment on Political Funds: proposing that the Tories’ ‘opt-in’ is retained – undermining unions’ right to campaign politically, and giving unions different and more draconian rules than other organisations.
October 28, 2025 at 5:39 PM
It’s not just the individual workers’ rights that the Lords have set their sights on – they’ve also been busy undermining Labour’s Manifesto commitment to repeal the 2016 Trade Union Act.
October 28, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Tory peers have been very creative and have designed a new Super Loophole to undermine any of the rights in Part 1 of the Bill, by creating a new kind of work called ‘seasonal work’

This undermines the right to a Guaranteed Hours Contract, protection from unfair dismissal and Fire and Rehire & more
October 28, 2025 at 5:39 PM
The right to have a Guaranteed Hours Contract that reflects the hours you work – the Lib Dems are adding a loophole – so workers can “opt out” from the right [AKA employers can ‘suggest’ their workers opt out].

The Bill already says workers can reject an offer of a Guaranteed Hours Contract.
