An ode to Apollo.
(a no longer) stray cat i watch you sit at the window, your notched ear pricks up at the sound of a garbage truck. the february sun warms the frozen grass, and i wonder what your last winter was like. did you make yourself a soft bed under a neighbor's deck? i used to watch you from the same dining room window, slinking from yard to yard, sunning yourself from the protection of the shrubbery. i contemplated if you would ever accept a scritch under the chin. the day you asked my daughter to come in, we opened the door without hesitation. although bedraggled, you had the air of a kind, gray gentleman. that was a ruse to get tuna treats. as a house cat, who manifested this outcome, you have certainly filled your days with activities like hiding among the towels in the linen closet, ambushing ankles from under chairs, stealing kibble, and being carried around like a baby. i watch you sit at the window, the contented rise and fall of your full, soft gray sides reassures me this cat is happily home.
