The definition I usually see is that her role in the story is to help a male protagonist find love and accomplish his goals, without having goals or needs of her own - being a fully realized character would supersede/negate that, in my opinion.

I mean, if she has goals and needs of her own, doesn't that take her outside of the definition of a manic pixie dream girl?
