According to the YG leader, God cared the most about those “untouched” youths.

But me? Though I’d been there for years? Raised and educated alongside? Attended birthday parties and Sunday School for YEARS? I wasn’t part of them. I was invisible.

I remember the faces. The names.

The silence.

A year later, our new youth group leader had everyone fired up to “reach out” to the kids at the public school that didn’t already attend our youth group.

Our youth group was a segregation academy-populated group of students.

NOT. ONE. of my peers could come up with something. These were people I had grown up with, gone to school with, GONE TO CHURCH WITH … they had nothing. I was a quiet teacher’s pet with no trouble or scandal attached to my name. But the youth group leader had to do all the work. It was excrutiating.
