Very excited to share my new paper w/ Wen-Cheng Lin & Wen-Chin Wu.
Using panel data from 108 countries between 2000 and 2020, we find that Chinese aid is significantly associated with decline in media freedom in recipient countries.

💡NEW RESEARCH ALERT💡

In places where territorial boundaries are contested, social solidarity becomes harder to build b/c people don’t agree on who they’re sharing risks with.

Our research shows that territorial state identity shapes welfare support, beyond nationalism.

For @foreignaffairs.com, @poscwty1.bsky.social and I write about how polarization in Taiwan has reached dangerous levels. Partisan politics needs an off-ramp, both for the sake of Taiwan’s national security, and its ability to function as a democracy.

For one of the first times ever, the Republic of China flag and the Taiwan independence flag were flown side by side at the April 19th protests in Taipei. @poscwty1.bsky.social and I write about why this is a big deal for Taiwan politics for @thediplomat.com:

Dear friends: The ESOC (Empirical Studies of Conflict) is coming to Taipei next June! Renard and I are helping organize the conference this time around, and there will be “lots of” cool people (no spoilers!) attending it and presenting their newest research on conflict.

Sad to hear the brilliant and great Walter Korpi passed. Korpi was on a very short list of my all time favorite political economic theorists. Almost all my work is fundamentally based on power resources theory. His work on the welfare state is pivotal and central to so many fields.
RIP Walter Korpi…
