Oop! Forgot to mention this was back on my radar because I was sifting through things to see what's already on the Web Archive and what needs to be scanned. This was reviewed on page 27 of........ I forgot the name, oops -_- Rabbi Tom did the cover art for the only ones I've seen, 1990ish.
![A 'zine page that's mostly a review of The Contest of Familiars. Article reads:
«The Contest of Familiars is the story of Shadow, a gentle-souled weasel who finds himself captured by magic and forced by a witch to participate in the 'Familiar of the Year' contest. A familiar being, of course, the pet/servant of a witch. The hag in question here has decided that cats, owls, toads etc. are too common and hopes to get an edge with an exotic familiar. Shadow wants no part of it but has no choice, the alternative being that he gets turned into a stone ornament.
Shadow is entered as 'Nimrod', which upsets him, but he had to endure plenty of other indignities and, worse yet, the contest is judged and set up along nasty lines. Events include a screeching contest and a combat event. Shadow uses his brain more than his brawn and the entire story is ingenious with unexpected twists and turns and just when you think it's over, it isn't. A thoroughly good read.
"Contest" originally appeared, as installments, in Rowrbrazzle, the funny animal APA. Tracy Horton [time sic] is an animator and brings a slightly Disney-esque style to this. A highly enjoyable story. Recommended. (Shadow also appears in Bestiary #3, reviewed elsewhere).

Most of the visual space is taken up by a cute drawing of Shadow the weasel, holding the chain attached to his collar, standing a bit awkwardly while saying "A funny thing happened to me on the way here tonight..."

There are "ferrets" but the only mechanically legal musteloids/HajvavDu' in it are Otters, which actually just had a huge flood of new cards in Furry Expansion
...actually, I think that set had a billion weasels in it that are legally Creature - Weasel. AND THERE IS ONE (1) "FERRET" FROM 1995WHOOPS
