When I saw him in a Q&A during the film's (too brief) run, he said that there were VFX, but "not any of the places you'd think". I think someone asked about a specific shot (the butterfly island, maybe), and he said that was not, but there were some non-obvious shots.

This sounds like a feature, and not a bug.
