The fastest person in your class is just as likely to be a professor in ten years, an undergrad in ten years, out of academia with a degree in ten years and out of academia without a degree in ten years. Same for everyone else in that class...

I recently read that Ann Druyan (co-writer of Cosmos) once asked her math teacher if circumference = 2pi*radius holds for all circles in the universe, and the teacher gave an unprintable answer. The fact that it *does not* hold is how we know the universe is curved, and that the teacher knew nothing

Mathematician. More of a comment than a question: "Ugh, I hated my math teacher in high school. Not as much as my dentist though, at least you are not a dentist".

What about details that make you love a movie you might otherwise be meh about?

I was kinda liking Reitman's Evolution until one character points out that "best adapted sometimes means least complex", which is something TV gets wrong about evolution all the time. I ❤️ it because of that one line

I remember seeing it on late night cable several times and I thought it was a very bad movie and I loved it so much

There's an episode where he very calmly states it's not Ibsen... it was a product placement vehicle meant to make money for it's creators and the network, and in *those* terms it was great. Even the narcissist fool understood what he has doing better than this

"I would double 2K and get 2 mill" is the perfect Trump lie because the premise is false (there are no 2K), if the premise were true then the implication is false (he would not double it at the casino) and even if the implication held the end result is false (no, you do not get 2mil by doubling 2K)

Notice how they focus their attention on "actions on the left"

Full of radical ideals, they even discuss blowing-up planes

Representation theory: once again the liberal obsession with "representation" rears its head. Notice how unbalanced their coverage is, with specific modules on the supposed "integral character" and "positive characteristics" of these representations.

That origami class is probably more formally demanding than half the standard undergrad math curriculum
