I tend to view things in cycles. The Victorians were hypocritical and paternalistic imperialists, but were they worse than Columbus, Cortez and that lot of genocidal, faithless and greedy invaders? And what was so great about stone-age headhunters? Perhaps many humans aren’t humanists.

“Books are inefficient” - no. Textbooks are useful (in whole or in part) or useless. All other books are either good, mediocre or bad. And a good book will nourish you even longer than a family feast with loved ones.

Critical thinking ? That’s the humanities. But maths teach analysis and an understanding of patterns (not only pattern recognition, which computers do better).
