This weekend's #BoxOffice saw 7 different movies make $10m or more for the first time since the pandemic, and the highest grosses for the titles finishing in the #6, 7, 8, 9 AND 10 positions since we reopened. It's easier said than done, but a diverse set of good movies still draws a crowd #filmsky

#Spirited is probably my favorite streaming movie (certainly the only one whose soundtrack I own on vinyl), and the holiday season isn't complete without me giving it a watch. Now those songs will be in my head for at least a week! #filmsky

Last night I watched the #Sorcerer episode of #StrangerThings5 and was struck by how another thing we've lost in the way most shows drop on streaming is the glory of a blow-out Fall Finale. I'm so excited to watch the Duffer Brothers land this plane in a movie theater on 1/1/26. #StrangerThings

Happy 100th birthday to Dick Van Dyke! Seriously, has there been any science done on why all the 40's-60's TV comedians lived so long? I think there's something there!

The point of Tarantino's self-imposed 10-movie limit was so no one would ever see him as a pathetic old shadow of his young cool self. Sadly, he didn't anticipate podcasts would give him a platform to punch down and rage at the clouds while probably leaving many great movies unmade. #filmsky

#GoodFortune is a pretty incredible movie. The most I've laughed in a theater in years, also gets pretty real about the state of our haves/have nots world. Perfectly cast: could anybody but Keanu have given that performance? #filmsky

#GoodBoy is not just one of the most unique horror movies you'll ever see, but also as true an independent film as you'll ever catch in a theater. Don't dream of not staying for the brief but indespensible post-credits documentary! #filmsky

It is an absolute cinematic crime that #TheLostBus, one of the best movies of the year, did not receive a wider theatrical release. Of all the streaming-ajacent studios, Apple makes the best movies, but seems to have no good sense of which ones deserve theatrical play & which ones don't.

I saw #DeadOfWinter as tonight's Regal #MondayMysteryMovie. it's a great thriller with strong performances by Emma Thompson & especially Judy Greer. The ending just wrecked me. I found myself crying in the bathroom on the way out, which I haven't done in years. Highly recommend. #filmsky

I wish studios would see the most important thing that makes the Conjuring franchise stand out: the same kind of strong heroic protagonists franchises in other genres are built around, not just a returning antagonist structure that doesn't really play for the general audience. #filmsky #boxoffice

So much talk about how #DisneyPlus helped amplify #InsideOut & Moana as franchises last year, I can't help but wonder if new fans also discovered the Conjuring & #FinalDestination franchises on streaming, helping set up the shocking #BoxOffice on new installments. #filmsky

5 years ago today, my local @flagshipcinemas.bsky.social reopened during COVID, and I went to see #NewMutants, my first indoor movie since March. Unwilling to sit with other people I didn't know, I'd stalk seating charts for empty showings & do private rentals with family until Memorial Day #filmsky

No one is talking about how #KPopDemonHunters opening in theaters long after its streaming debut is a significant departure from past Netflix policies, always using theaters to promote upcoming drops. Pretty sure they've never done this before, & I'd love to know why they're doing it now. #BoxOffice

If you're looking for a movie this weekend, let me recommend two I caught as Regal's #MondayMysteryMovie. Relay is a smart 70's-flavored thriller powered by a great Riz Ahmed. And Ron Howard's Eden spins a historical murder mystery into a fun soapy all-star drama about how people pretty much suck.

Lots of movies play at "what if a famous sci-fi franchise was real," but none has ever done it better than the Kaiju Attack docudrama #ShinGodzilla. It's a privilege to see it in a theater again. #filmsky

Not only was the @rifftrax.com treatment of Timecop hilarious, but it gave me a chance to see that movie, which I unironically love, in a theater for the first time in 31 years!

Thanks to my local revival house, saw #SinginInTheRain for the first time ever. A very funny comedy, not really my kind of musical, but fascinating to see a 1952 movie being nostalgic for the 20's like us talking about Y2K. It's even a jukebox musical; those old-timey songs were already old #filmsky

If Hollywood is ever to get back to pre-COVID box office numbers, they've got to revive comedy as a bankable genre. Saw #TheNakedGun with about a dozen people who laughed at most of the jokes, you don't even need a packed house for other laughing people to be its own kind of 4DX. #filmsky

Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) has a speech in #FantasticFourFirstSteps that I've waited my whole moviegoing life to hear. Just hate how studio movies use family as a license for selfishness rather than challenging characters to find a way to look out for others while looking out for their own. #filmsky

I don't know that it's possible to make a good movie whose mission statement is to "start a cinematic universe". #IronMan and #ManOfSteel depict events that are the Big Bang of movie universes, but neither of them are trying to sell you a ticket to the next one in the lobby.

Why are people having this "why does original animation fail?" conversation like you can't line up stills from the recent flops next to ones from Toy Story, Cars, etc & see they're not remotely the same thing. Selling animation is all about love at first sight with the character designs #filmsky

Ballerina struggles with the usual issues of these world building brand extension movies, but that flamethrower battle at the end is one of the coolest fight scenes I've ever seen in a movie #JohnWick #filmsky

Caught #KarateKidLegends at a theater in Delaware, the 9th state where I've seen a movie (just 41 to go!). It's not really the movie the ads promise, and went through the weed whacker to get down to 95 minutes, but it was a lot of fun. Few movies have so many scene-stealing side characters. #filmsky

The Regal Monday Mystery Movie was #BringHerBack, and it's a hell of a thing, affirming the Philippou Brothers place as a major new force in the horror genre. Sally Hawkins gives one of the most believable, lived-in performances I've ever seen in this kind of movie. #filmsky

Not a fan of the Thunderbolts name change. The movie is building to that reveal, and it won't have the same impact for those who know it going in. #filmsky
