Which teams in women's football are most effective and reliant on set pieces?

In this article I discuss how important Set Piece xG is for teams, as well as their reliance on different set pieces: corners, free kicks and throw-ins.

All's Well That Ends Well... With a Long Throw-in ☄️⚽️📊

Using historical data (2022/2023 - 2025/2026) from Top 5 European leagues + Eredivise, I've analysed long throw-in trends, volume and quality. Are they truly back?

You beat me to it haha! I'm writing an article, where this is included as well - although being my own model to evaluate quality, but yes. I really think this is very interesting.

Here’s the top 20 players in those five leagues for quality of throws into the box in the last 12 months. Note how some clubs are really leaning into it (Brentford, Hoffenheim, Parma, RBL). Kayode is also second for volume of throws into the box per 90 in this period

Is the long throw-in making a comeback?

It seems that the Bundesliga was early on the trend that's happening in Premier League now, but the Premier League has seen an explosive growth in long throw-ins.

La Liga, Ligue 1 and Serie A don't seem to take part in this particular trend.

What tactical state happens after a dribble?

Using Hidden Markov Models on dribbles to see how much a dribbles progresses attacks in the English Premier League 2025-2026. Moving from event data to tactical states.

Interesting point. I don't have the data on this at hand, but I feel this also is happening in the Eredivisie and as a consequence the quality of the league is shifting from a distinct top-mid-bottom quality to a top-bottom quality, the extremes rule.

Transfer fees can tell us a lot about how clubs can and want to construct a squad.

The positions of the big five/six are very clear, with Newcastle obviously seeking to bridge the gap. The gap between the big teams and the rest is also pretty huge, with two very clear clusters

Introducing the Stretched Play Value-model (SPV) - NWSL

Can we use event data to suggest off-ball presence without tracking data? It's tricky, but it can lead to interesting insights + creative process with data.

The longer I work with raw data, the more I realise how many biased decisions are made. Which isn't inherently bad, but how we should always be aware of it.
