Chained to the staleness of the city, he is chased inside by the cold of winter. Now, he is as creative as a creepy, crawly cockroach, foraging for food. Maybe winter will find a way to show him beauty he can't resist, or maybe this will be the winter of our despair.

It was 5 pm, and the fire pit was roaring. It was still cold, but the fire was doing a good job of taking the chill off. Eventually, our oldest granddaughter joined me. My wife had purchased the groceries for Christmas Eve and finally arrived with a glass of wine. She brought me a tasty Coquito.

It's approaching 7am eastern time on the Sunday before Christmas. I'm the only one up. It's 28 degrees Fahrenheit here in Mableton, Georgia, USA. It's dark and cozy as I sit in my recliner with a warm blanket, and my robe snuggles up around my ears. I'm surrounded by presents and Christmas socking.
