Yes every train that belonged to dad should go around a christmas tree

Oh good bsky can now accept this video!

This is my Dad's childhood Lionel 1654.
It is heavy. It is loud. It shoots sparks out the sides.

The dog has very strong feelings about it.

The phrase I always had in mind was "unintelligent design"

Like... look at all this useless redundancy? And so many points of failure? Vestigial complexity just hanging around doing nothing? It's a mess.

Who is the doing that took a look at pie crust and thought:

"Here is the most temperamental pastry component, while also being completely mid in the best case. Let's make it the core foundation of the entire dessert."

Bad crust ruins pie. Bad crust cheesecake? I didn't even notice it had crust.

Doing rhymes with boing; it's a pejorative

mmm what really need is whatever lives in that 4th quadrant; this "problem isn't real" x "This solution really solves it (convinces the mark it's gone forever)"

That technology is the exorcism the world needs right now.

I need to drive up to gridley CA soon and get more tube track; hopefully before tree time.

Should get some more old indestructible gondolas, too. *That's* where the fun comes from.
November 23, 2025 at 11:44 PM
Right; I'm not thinking the problem needs to be real or true.

A media and social environment that implants the idea "crime is bad and getting worse" despite it not being confirmed by the lived experience of individuals contaminated with that idea. That's the base upon which grifts are executed.
November 23, 2025 at 11:26 PM
I've only seen Glonzo described in terms of prices; i'm fairly certain the opaqueness of any process (in this example, the market for energy prices) is load bearing.

Glonzo wouldn't manifest under the circumstances "i don't mind the cost of electricity and we're not having blackouts"
November 23, 2025 at 11:05 PM
I think this really supported by the differential amount of talent and effort demonstrated by grifters vs confidence gamers.

Constructing and deploying that problem in order to profit from the mark is hard work.

Showing up with the hard work already done and simply picking up money, however...
November 23, 2025 at 10:40 PM
Ok, counter theory: it's not the realness of the problem that distinguishes a grift, it's the external and pre-existing nature of it.

Cons create their own setup, then act upon it.
Grifts act upon perceived problems that are already extant.
November 23, 2025 at 10:35 PM
I feel like this is in conflict with glonzo theory. Many things that feel reasonably classified as "grifts" are operating on imagined, hallucinated, or deluded problems under the hood.

Why did they end those projects? I've got a friend that works with secondary metabolites at JGI and it always sounds like there is a massive wealth of useful and interesting things just waiting to be dug up and sequenced.

the only right answers are:
Live tree
T5 bulbs, rainbow
Tube track Lionel oval old enough to shoot sparks as it runs
