Who is Jonathan Ross? ICE agent who killed Renee Good once broke a suspect's car window
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good has been identified as 43-year-old Jonathan Ross. _**_Keep up with the latest in LGBTQ+ news and politics.Sign up for The Advocate's email newsletter._**_ The 37-year-old poet and mother was killed Wednesday morning in Minneapolis, Minnesota, sending shockwaves across the nation as video of the incident circulated online. The officer seen firing the shots was first identified as Ross by _The Minnesota Star Tribune_ , revealing a firearms instructor who appears to have defended white supremacists online. The DHS has said that “rioters began blocking ICE officers” during what it called “targeted operations" near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. The department alleged that Good “weaponized” her vehicle by attempting to run over agents, labeling her actions as "domestic terrorism" and those of the officers as "self defense," but multiple eyewitness accounts and video footage from the incident contradict this. The footage shows Good was attempting to leave the scene by turning right when an agent approached her vehicle from the side and opened fire into her driver's seat window. The vehicle then accelerated, crashing into a nearby light post, with the officer who was seen firing the shots then walking away from the wreckage. While officials have not identified Ross, DHS head Kristi Noem and Vice President JD Vance both referenced an incident from last year in which the officer who shot Good was dragged several hundred feet by a car after breaking a suspect's window. Here's everything we know so far about Ross, who has not been charged with a crime. ### Jonathan Ross is an ICE agent and firearms trainer Jonathan E. Ross, 43, is an Enforcement and Removal Operations agent with ICE. He was deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2005, where he operated machine guns on patrol trucks, before joining Border Patrol in 2007 and eventually ICE in 2015, when he moved to Minneapolis. He is also a member of the SWAT team, the St. Paul Special Response Team, and a joint FBI anti-terrorism task force. In a December testimony obtained by WIRED, Ross described his job as "normal Border Patrol duties,” including "line-watch operations, tracking, and ... creating an intelligence product and focusing more so on the cartels and drug smuggling and also alien smuggling.” He said it is his responsibility to "develop the targets, create a target package, surveillance, and then develop a plan to execute the arrest warrant." He also works as a firearms and active shooter instructor. ### Jonathan Ross's family is complicated Ross married his wife, 38, who was identified by _The Daily Mail_but not named, in 2012. She has parents who live in the Philippines, though Ross's father, Ed, 80, said that she is a U.S. citizen. He did not say how long she has been in the country, stating, "I do not want to go any further than that." Ross's family and friends describe him as a hardcore conservative Christian and MAGA supporter, who sports "Don't Tread on Me" flags and Trump/Vance stickers. Social media posts reveal him arguing with his family over the white supremacist group the Proud Boys. His sister, Nicole, posted a photo on Facebook in October 2020 of herself wearing a face mask with the caption, "I denounce and condemn white supremacy," the outlet reports. Ross replied in a comment that has since been deleted, prompting Nicole to respond, "we have to respectfully disagree. You are my brother and I love you, but we will not engage in a debate on Facebook." ### Jonathan Ross broke a suspect's car window last year Ross was injured in June 2025 while apprehending a man for deportation in Bloomingdale, Minnesota, _The Star Tribune_reported at the time. Roberto Carlos Munoz-Guatemala had previously been convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and was in his car when approached by agents. When Munoz-Guatemala would not fully roll down his window, Ross broke the car's rear window in an effort to unlock the door from the inside. Munoz-Guatemala then accelerated, dragging Ross about 300 feet down the road while he attempted to tase the driver. Ross required 20 stitches in his right arm and 13 stitches in his left hand. Munoz-Guatemala was convicted in December of assaulting a federal officer. Ross said during his December testimony under cross-examination that he has performed hundreds of vehicle stops and often encounters people who "act like they’re confused" or do not know he's a federal officer. “I believe it's—it seems to be something that some people just—just say to—to stall,” he testified. “I believe a lot of time people are on the phone and they're waiting for people to get—to show up, especially with our line of work. They've got phone trees where they call and then protesters show up.”

Federal child care funding freeze could devastate Silicon Valley
**Getting yourTrinity Audio player ready...** --- California and four other democratic-led states are challenging the federal government’s abrupt decision to freeze billions of dollars that allow low-income families access to child care and other social services. The freeze could have a major effect on the financial health of child day care centers across Silicon Valley, with the region already struggling with a dearth of providers. One provider who operates a day care center in East San Jose said 80% of her clients rely on these federal subsidies to put their children in her care — and a majority of her business operates with federal dollars. “It’s very scary,” Lakisha Harris, owner of Brilliant Minds Daycare, told San José Spotlight. “That’s why I have another job. That’s what supports me right now.” Harris said December reimbursements should be hitting her bank account in the next week or two. But January payments may be uncertain, even though a federal judge on Jan. 9 temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from freezing funds. The order will last for 14 days unless it’s extended. The freeze is directed toward California, Minnesota, New York, Colorado and Illinois across three funding categories, which President Donald Trump’s administration claims has “serious concerns about widespread fraud.” ### Related Stories February 10, 2025 #### San Jose funds program to boost day care capacity February 13, 2024 #### Silicon Valley parents face highest child care costs October 6, 2022 #### Santa Clara County families lack critical child care, report says The feds are withholding $2.4 billion from the Child Care and Development Fund, which provides low-income families with child care subsidies, $869 million from the Social Services Block Grant, which supports social services, and more than $7 billion from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families — also known as CalWORKs in California—which provides cash assistance. Together the total freeze is more than $10 billion in funding. California accounts for about $5 billion of the $10 billion of funds being frozen across all five states. Santa Clara County receives more than $63 million for CalWORKS, which provides cash assistance to support employment goals, child care services and other pathways to sufficiency for 6,100 families, according to data provided by the county. County Executive James Williams said the county has yet to see the direct impacts of the freeze, but is deeply concerned about the harm this could cause statewide. “The Trump administration’s freeze on federal funding for child care and social services is yet another attack on some of our nation’s most vulnerable families, threatening essential programs that millions of Californians rely on for stability and dignity,” Williams told San José Spotlight. “Our social services programs remain available and accessible, and we will continue to stand up for the families who depend on them.” The county is assessing and monitoring the situation as more information comes from the state. Jessica Chang, CEO of child care provider network Upwards, said delays in payments will create stress for families and impede their ability to go to work, since they rely on these subsidies to put their children in day care. It will also affect home-based day care providers, who are already operating on thin margins. Closures of any more day care facilities will put additional strain on the county, where roughly 700 local child care location have closed over the past decade. “This could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” Chang told San José Spotlight. “Do you (choose to) have a business, or do you need to shut your doors down?” A lawsuit filed Jan. 8 by all five states alleges the federal government’s claim on potential fraud is based on “pretext” since it failed to produce evidence. The federal government is asking these states to turn over nearly all their documents related to these programs within 14 days. “As Defendants know, that is an impossible task on an impossible timeline,” the lawsuit states. “This request reveals the fundamental problem with Defendants’ position: they did not engage in any meaningful investigation before taking the draconian step of withholding all funding under the programs and only now seek to find any evidence of noncompliance.” A spokesperson with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees these grants, simply replied with a link to its announcement of the freeze when San José Spotlight asked the department to provide instances of fraud in child care funding and how long the freeze will continue. Chang said that in any government assistance program, misuse of funds is inevitable but that isn’t the majority of providers. There are guardrails in place for compliance, including a licensing entity that provides oversight.Aside from the fraud, there are inefficiencies in the system that point to a larger problem and make it harder for families to get the subsidies they need, and providers to be sustained, Chang said. For example, it can take a family up to six months to receive approval for federal subsidies. And providers need to submit attendance sheets — oftentimes in paper format — at the end of every month in order to be reimbursed. This delays payments for weeks and makes providers hesitant to care for low-income families, Chang said. “We absolutely 100% want to be able to address fraud,” Chang said. “But a way to make the whole system easier is to have technology in that equation.” _Contact Joyce Chu at[email protected] or @joyce_speaks on X. _ *[February 10, 2025]: February 10, 2025 *[February 13, 2024]: February 13, 2024 *[October 6, 2022]: October 6, 2022

ICE isn't even a quarter of a century old. Roe was older than that and it got torpedoed *and* that was a former SCOTUS decision. ICE is not. don't be so damp.
Of course, none of this is going to happen. Abolishing ICE is about as likely as fixing the electoral college.
