If Russia had intercepted a humanitarian flotilla in international waters, abducted those on board, and taken them to a detention centre, there would AT LEAST be a major diplomatic response — and rightly so. Why not now?

EMERGENCY: ISRAEL ATTACKS GSF
Israel has attacked the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters. People of conscience have been abducted.
The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and the Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.

Israel has attacked the Global Sumud Flotilla. Unarmed people of conscience, abducted in international waters. This is piracy. This is kidnapping.

Text: We will never stop challenging Israel's illegal blockade - a siege weaponized to starve, silence, and imprison Palestinians.
Stand with us to break the siege and hold governments and institutions accountable for enabling Israel's crimes.

Just back from my first meeting with the Swedish Young Academy in beautiful Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm. I really enjoyed the open discussions, where shared challenges in academia became pathways to solutions, the mix of disciplines, and even a workshop on storytelling. A great start!
View of a calm sea at sunset in Nynäshamn, Sweden. Tall pine trees frame a path leading down to the water, with soft pink and orange tones in the sky reflected on the water.

Europe must act as a power, not a subordinate. Smiling handshakes and weak deals with rogue leaders won’t be forgotten. History will judge us by what we choose to legitimise, and right now, we’re legitimising far too much on too many fronts.

What a deal!
The EU has "agreed to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on additional US energy products and weapons, in exchange for the broad 15 per cent levy that covers many European exports including cars."
Not a misprint. Unthinkable during my lifetime. But this is 2025.

Really happy to see this work published! Last year, when we started working with protoplasts, Stéphane connected us with Léa, who was incredibly helpful. She did a fantastic job teaching the students in our group protocols and tricks, and I’m really grateful. This pipeline will be useful for many!👇

Attending the 2025 International Conference on Plant Cell Wall Biology at UBC? Don’t miss the next session—I’ll be presenting my team member Nancy Soni’s work on the link between the cell wall and the cell cycle. Hope to see you there!
A laptop on a wooden bench at the University of British Columbia, showing a presentation slide titled “From Integrity to Division: How cell wall status controls the cell cycle in plants” by Laura Bacete and team member Nancy Soni. In the background, the UBC water fountain and the words “University of British Columbia” are visible, with people and trees around under a clear blue sky.

Glad midsommar!! ☀️
My cat Nidelva, a white cat with orange and black patches —calico, I think—, yawns while wearing a small midsummer flower crown made of purple, yellow, and green flowers. She’s lying on a grey cushion and wearing a GPS tracker collar.

Fair enough! @lorenzoorts.bsky.social and your take showed me I am wrong! Let’s hope this initiative helps solving those structural issues.
laurabacete.bsky.social
And let’s be honest: people don’t read a so-so paper by a man in Nature and say “he only got in because he’s a man”. Women deserve the same benefit of the doubt. (4/4)
laurabacete.bsky.social
That bias begins well before submission, but it also affects who feels encouraged or entitled to submit. Supporting more women in reaching that stage is both reasonable and necessary. (3/4)
laurabacete.bsky.social
If we start from the premise that men and women are equally capable of leading excellent research, then the fact that the distribution of corresponding authors doesn’t reflect that, especially in a journal seen as a benchmark of excellence, points to structural bias. (2/4)
laurabacete.bsky.social
Respectfully, I think this is a wrong take. As a woman and a young PI, I won’t stop submitting to Nature, and I won’t worry about what others assume. (1/4)
