As we watch the unfolding disaster in LA with horror, let's remember that 🇨🇦 is far from immune.

For the last couple of weeks, I've been taking my roommate's #dog out for daily walks, and she has been OBSESSED with managing to play fetch with this particular stick. For some reason, it's not been working. 🤔 Please advise.

It's soup weather, so I decided to make myself some #ComfortFood last night in form ofof delicious, delicious onion soup with fresh baked bread. Didn't have any mozzarella, but soft goat's cheese was nearly as lovely. 🍲

I’m proud to join more than 30 colleagues today in sharing our analysis of potential risks from “mirror life”. We summarize our findings in a @science.org article, and in greater detail in a 300pg technical report:

Scientists, academics, researchers: We’re excited to share that @altmetric.com is now tracking mentions of your research on Bluesky! 🧪
There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

A Place of Joy.

This is a fascinating piece, because it underscores the key problem in explaining of AI tools to a general public. How can we explain the behaviours and functionality of programs that *talk* like humans, but don't *think* like humans?

And there it is! 'Think'! Even that word encodes assumptions.
Nice piece by @melaniemitchell.bsky.social on metaphors in AI.

Too often, scientists see metaphors as avoidable and problematic. But metaphors do--and must--structure how we conceive, design, and legislate for AI.

We shouldn't decry metaphors; we should use them attentively.

While on the topic of #WritingAdvice, the 2nd most useful piece I've ever seen (mostly for narrative writing) is 'have characters do chores while talking'

The example given was dish washing, but it works for anything from saddling a horse to playing cards. Pair action with dialogue. Much snappier!

This is absolutely the piece of writing advice I have used the most since reading it a decade ago.
Tip for writers, especially academics . . .

Some of my favourite pieces of #SpecFic take a close look at the mundane elements of fantastic worlds. The #podcasts 'Superhuman Public Radio' by @fableandfolly.bsky.social and World Gone Wrong are two great examples.

Intrigued? 🦸‍♀️🧛 Check out my review:
