𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚙𝚢 𝚋𝚒𝚛𝚝𝚑𝚍𝚊𝚢, 𝚙𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚎 𝚋𝚎 𝚖𝚢 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚛 ♡

nearly twenty years ago, i moved from birmingham, alabama to college station, texas. a year after that, i wrote a one-act about myself, lonely & lovelorn, talking to a figment of my imagination. the star of the play, in the role of my male self, was a boy i'd had a crush on.

one year ago today, please be my star was released. my debut fiction graphic novel -- a love letter to those two years in college station, to my teen self, to my love sergio diaz, & to many other moments in my life. a beautiful synthesis of many, many moments in my youth in texas.

i'm deeply thankful for everyone who red & enjoyed or thought deeply about the comic. i'm especially thankful to everyone who shared their thoughts & feelings about the book -- with me or otherwise.

it's selfish to admit, but at times i'm pretty solemn about how please be my star has been treated out in the world. people have sent me wonderfully kind messages, and people have also written very disparaging & dismissive reviews.

it's all very confusing to take in.
"which is it?" i wonder.

i'm well aware it's a weird book; a weird book is exactly what i intended to make.

so, all i can hope is that i'll be able to make comics like this for the rest of my life. i'm incredibly grateful & happy i got to make please be my star.

to those of you who have held it, for any length of time, in your heart -- i can't thank you enough.
