I made changes to the jacket w/ more research; it’s now lined w/ silk, and has ribbon ties over handmade brass hooks. 💜

I’m wearing a white starched standing collar with matching ruffs, an embroidered coif, my embroidered jacket, a black velvet coat with pink trim (called a gown) that has hanging sleeves, a fancy white lace-edged apron, and a silk skirt in greenish blue.

Apropos of nothing, I was reading my copy of The Besler Florilegium (1613), & thought a painting of laburnum looks kind of like the motifs on the embroidered jacket from the Museum of London. *sigh* Need to completely rebuild my website.

The jacket is drawn as if worn, with the front pulled closed, an high neckline, and the arms out in front (figure is facing 2/3 left), to show the embroidery design. A colour photograph of plate 8 from the Besler Florilegium, 1613, showing two kinds of laburnum flowers. Left is Alpine laburnum, with long bracts of small yellow flowers, seed pods, and green leaves. Right is Laburnum (false ebony), which has larger yellow flower bracts, and no seed pods. The false ebony laburnum has a resemblance to the embroidered bracts on the Museum of London jacket. An ink drawing by me of the individual motifs repeated on the Museum of London embroidered jacket. They are somewhat abstract, but the top of the false ebony laburnum in the Besler Florilegium (plate 8) shows how the upper part of the branch matches both the leaf and the drooping bracts in the embroidery. So, instead of a vine, as I suggested on my very old (and in need of rebuilding) website, these could be construed as false ebony laburnum, since the Florilegium and the jacket are from roughly the same date. It’s just a theory. “A Surprise in the Deep” - a marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a scary pale green mercreature that is hunched, tail curled up tight, snarling at the viewer. Their eyes glint in the camera’s light, deep-set in dark sockets, so the size of their eyes is uncertain. They have pale green axolotl-like feelers surrounded by darker green frills around their head, and they are spread out around the head like they have been surprised and are trying to look bigger. Clearly, they are not happy about being interrupted during their meal. They have a scaled tail of the same green as their head frills, with small paler green ragged fins along each side, and their tail splits into two at the end with two snake-like ends (no flukes). They have pale green skin on their thin upper body, and long humanoid hands with long claw nails. Their left hand is holding a pale, dead fish, and their right arm is hanging straight down behind their tail, with their hand flat, ready to attack. It wasn’t meant to be an alien, but something happened, and this was the result. The metallic purple paint highlights seemed logical after that, as did the red metallic eyes with yellow irises and sideways black pupils in the toad’s very large eyes. The smile was intentional. This is a very happy purple alien toad. Above the toad’s back is written “toadally confident in my weird”, with a gold star at each end, and surrounded by red metallic dots. Reference: 19th century botanical toad prints, but it’s kind of moot at this point.

The Pan owl is a Virginia relative of the saw-whet owl, but has no interest in camouflage. Nocturnal, tends to be found in hollow trees, roadsides, and nightclubs. 🤨🧐

“Dragon Moonbathing” - A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of an orange sea dragon with yellow scaled swimming wings, sitting on a rock in the ocean. It is night, and there is a large moon silhouetting the dragon’s head. One forepaw is crossed over the other, and their very long tail is twisted and curled on the rock below them. The dragon, facing right, has no back legs, only webbed forepaws and swimming wings. Their head is tilted, so that their pupil reflects light like a cat. Their scales are dotted with gold, their wings are edged with gold, and the reflected moonlight is outlined on their wing and body scales in silver. The sea is dark grey-blue, the sky is deep night blue. No stars; the dragon is the star. Inspiration: Anton Seder crocodile and lizard monster, but mainly the crocodile. A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of three feathers, with an orange curved title: “All Under One Wing”. There are two smaller feathers in front of a central large feather. The left front feather is the trans flag (horizontal light blue, pink, white, pink, light blue), and the right front feather is the asexual flag (horizontal purple, white, grey, black)(the flag is usually the other way round, but I like it better this way - artistic choice). The board is red and black (I think it is a checkers board), and the pieces are orange, purple, and pink, because someone ate half the purple pieces (I wonder who). Underneath the chess board, white lettering on green grass says “Not all Frogs should Play Chess.”. They are sitting on grass with rolling hills in the background, under a blue sky with light clouds. Frogs are doing things in the background: left, a frog is half visible coming over the near hill, and an orange frog is looking panicked on the far left hill, as their purple frog friend has fallen over, feet in the air. Right, a purple frog and an orange frog are waving at each other from separate hills. This was inspired by a single goofy-looking frog in a 1577 print. Fred’s second cousin is more into adventures in trees than Broadway. You probably shouldn’t trust them with your wallet.

The Bsky art community was inspiring and encouraging, and I learned! (dates, yadda, yadda):

Their wings are edged with shaped scales in a three-petal flower pattern, and the main part of the wings is worked in an Art Deco style fan pattern, divided so that it is dark on one half and light on the other, then edged with a complementary blue line that is edged with gold. The sky behind them is yellow, dark at the top, lighter at the bottom, with a very light yellow sun edged with white paint pen. This is part of a series of pattern studies using dragon shapes, working gold opaque ink over shaded marker colours. The cliff is grey, cool in the shadow, and warmer where the rays of sun are hitting the rock. “Dragon Moonbathing” - A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of an orange sea dragon with yellow scaled swimming wings, sitting on a rock in the ocean. It is night, and there is a large moon silhouetting the dragon’s head. One forepaw is crossed over the other, and their very long tail is twisted and curled on the rock below them. The dragon, facing right, has no back legs, only webbed forepaws and swimming wings. Their head is tilted, so that their pupil reflects light like a cat. Their scales are dotted with gold, their wings are edged with gold, and the reflected moonlight is outlined on their wing and body scales in silver. The sea is dark grey-blue, the sky is deep night blue. No stars; the dragon is the star. Inspiration: Anton Seder crocodile and lizard monster, but mainly the crocodile.

OCs The Watchers (& their Boss, The Mouse Prophet), pt. 2:
A marker, ink, & paint pen drawing of my OCs, The Watchers (TW), two supernatural robed creatures with gold hands & wings, robed so that their faces (we think they don’t have any!) are covered, showing only the mouse-like ear bumps on their heads. The sky is dark blue and filled with stars and galaxies. The ground is grey-green and flat. Even Death is not safe from The Watchers’ shenanigans! Naughty little things! A marker and ink drawing of my OCs The Watchers (TW), two faceless hooded creatures with gold hands and wings, but no faces (we still don’t know if they have any!). The Watchers are at an Earth (probably US) prom, standing under a balloon arch of pink, blue, and white balloons, under a purple and silver sign that says “PROM ‘87: MOON DAZE!”. The left Watcher is wearing their light brown robe with a huge blue satin bow tie, and a ruffled blue shirt front. They have their arms crossed, and the shape of their hood face gives the impression they are sulking. They have a speech balloon on the left, saying “I wanted to wear the prom dress! *grumble*”. The right Watcher is wearing a bright pink satin dress over their light brown robe, a prom dress in the high-waist empire style, with puffed upper sleeves with triangle-shaped lower sleeves (like their robe, but pink!). There is a deeper pink sash at waist level, and a flared skirt with a ruffle around the base. The ruffle is edged with a line of ribbon and bows in the same pink as the sash, with a matching bow attached to their hood by their right ear. They are turned slightly left, towards the other Watcher, and they have a speech bubble on the right, saying “you can wear it next week, ok? Now, where is my corsage?” (They heard about corsages, and are intrigued. There will probably be bones involved). The background is deep blue, like the photo background for proms, and covered in silver stars. The carpet is dark red, like a hotel carpet. A small sign on a stand is partially visible on the far left, saying “PHOTO LINE HERE”, with an arrow pointing down. This was inspired by a repost going round that asked to see people’s OCs in different outfits. I asked various OCs, and The Watchers said yes, but they tricked me; they just put the clothes on over their robes! (IDK whether they have bodies, or are just sentient robes, but they’re agender.) Prom is delightful to TWs; the angst is delicious and full of Watcher nutrients!

“The Prophet, Summoned”, a marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of my OC, The Mouse Prophet; an anthropomorphic mouse skeleton with a spiky gold halo around their skull floating in the air. The Prophet is AroAce, and has no gender orientation, because they have no organs. They are quite opinionated, and will melt eyeballs if you summon them before they’ve had their morning coffee. The Prophet is floating above three anthropomorphic mice, who all look very unhappy about it. The Prophet has a green robe with a trim row of green eyes on a blue background down the front, and around the cuffs of their robe, and their skull is turned to the left. Two small winged, robed creatures stand on either side of the skeleton, with hoods hiding their faces. Their wings are gold. The one on the left is peeking around the green robe of the skeleton. These are the Watchers, spooky little angelic creatures who are telepathic, and find it extremely funny to persuade mice to summon The Prophet before The Prophet has had their morning coffee. The three mice who have summoned the skeleton mouse (The Prophet) are visible from the shoulders up. The right mouse is medium brown, and has their hands over their eyes. The middle mouse is light brown and has yellow eyes with pinpoint pupils surrounded by lines, because they made the mistake of staring right at The Prophet. The left mouse is reddish brown, and is holding a book in their left hand, held open with their thumb. The left page reads “Unsummoning the thing you summoned”, and the right page reads “You summoned the PROPHET, didn’t you? …idiot.”. I think the mice might be in a bit of trouble. Dimension” on the bottom shelf, and “Q Dimension”, two shelves above. There is a bottle of Chianti on the shelf marked “Earth Dimension - 1 Planet”, “Lot of People, Though!”, and “The Whole Shelf!”, which is the second shelf from the bottom. The bottles are all labeled with names that match their dimension shelf, and they’re all silly. The “Dinosaur Dimension” shelf (top shelf) has bottles marked “RAAAR!”, and Dr. Wu’s Soft Cardigan” (I’m not sure what’s in that one; The Watchers are a little hazy on what constitutes blood). None of these labels are essential to the picture, they’re just me amusing myself and maybe the two people who will enlarge the image enough to read my bad handwriting. I love the idea of The Watchers being not quite sure what blood looks like, but being very proud of their comprehensive collection. The Watchers are such scamps! The Prophet Gets The Wrong Coffee - a marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of my OC, The Mouse Prophet, sitting at a wooden table on the right of the image, looking left at my OC, The Watcher, on the left. A white text box on the right, above the signature has the text: “…it was not the same.”. The Prophet is a bipedal skeleton with a mouse skull, which is resting on their left skeletal hand as they raise their eyebrow at The Watcher, tapping their right finger bones on the table impatiently. The Prophet is wearing a green robe with a line of green-irised eyes down the front of the robe and around the cuffs of the sleeves; the eyes move, and here, they are all staring at the coffee. The prophet, as befits a deity, has a large golden halo with spikes radiating out, edged with gold dots. The Watcher, one of a pair, is an assistant to The Prophet, and is a small, gold-winged, robed creature with gold hands. Their head is hooded, with mouse ear bumps, but no visible face. No one even knows if they have a face, and no one has ever seen it (no one still alive, at least!). The Prophet normally thinks The Watchers are funny, but The Prophet’s morning coffee is SACRED!

OC Bela Lugosquid, Jan ➡️ Nov 2025:
A marker, ink, paint pen and paper collage drawing of my OC, Bela Lugosquid, a common squid, pale pink-grey with red and grey spots, facing left slightly, asleep. They are smiling (yes, I know, that’s not where their mouths are), and are wearing a pair of fake fangs, a black cloak with a red lining, white bow tie and vest, white shirt, and a red ribbon with a spiny Black Sea urchin attached to the ribbon by holding onto a gold ring. Basically, dressed like Bella Lugosi’s famous outfit* in Dracula (1931). Their tentacles and arms are drifting gently, with an arm on the right touching the edge of the cloak. Dream bubbles coming from their head feature an image of Bella Lugosi as Dracula from the movie poster (image sourced from IMDb.com). Bela Lugosquid is non-binary. They are fascinated by vampire squid, but too shy to actually talk to any actual vampire squid (and afraid of negative reactions). They are a very happy squid. They have dreams of stardom. I don’t know about the sea urchin; they usually don’t go that deep. *Of course that outfit is famous! Everyone saw that movie in theaters, right? We’re all immortal, right? …right? Just me, then. Bela Lugosquid is wearing a fancy bow tie in the trans flag colours instead of his usual white tie, because they do not give a stuff about dress codes made up by transphobic numpties. *Squids prefer to be in the open sea, not aquariums, but this is the only way Bela get to visit their friend, Nosferawwwwtu. The squid on the right has a large ribbon sash in the trans flag colours tied in a bow around their neck. Their eyes are closed, they are holding their purple candle in a tentacle and weeping. The sea around them is a deep lavender blue with silver dots and gold hearts floating in the water. Top right, a white square sign edged with gold says “Transgender Day of Remembrance 2025”, with cursive lettering underneath that says “for all trans ppl silenced by hate.”. This is a day both Bela and I take seriously. We remember the trans people lost this year, and every year.

Weird monsters, Jan ➡️ Nov 2025:

The eyes are at the top of the image; the right one is big, with a light dot on the pupil, the left eye is smaller, with a pinpoint pupil, and also has a light dot. Below the eyes is an upper row of slightly yellow fanged teeth, curved in a smile. The look in the eyes is eager, as if they are really looking forward to ripping your throat out. Like, seriously delighted at the thought, regarding you with anticipation. Unlike those monsters, this monster is sitting cross-legged on the ground, with an unhappy expression (mouth only, no nose or eyes). Their hands are resting, crossed, on their legs. Their stinkhorns are adorned with brown slime (there is also slime on their body and limbs). Flies are flying around the monster, one fly on the left with a little heart emoji, one on the right with an “!” (it’s called an interrobang sometimes). This is a very sad fungus monster. “A Surprise in the Deep” - a marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a scary pale green mercreature that is hunched, tail curled up tight, snarling at the viewer. They are coloured like a camera has lit them up, bright against a featureless dark background. They have huge fangs, with nostrils set high between their eyes. Their eyes glint in the camera’s light, deep-set in dark sockets, so the size of their eyes is uncertain. They have pale green axolotl-like feelers surrounded by darker green frills around their head, and they are spread out around the head like they have been surprised and are trying to look bigger. Clearly, they are not happy about being interrupted during their meal. They have a scaled tail of the same green as their head frills, with small paler green ragged fins along each side, and their tail splits into two at the end with two snake-like ends (no flukes). They have pale green skin on their thin upper body, and long humanoid hands with long claw nails. Their left hand is holding a pale, dead fish, and their right arm is hanging straight down behind their tail, with their hand flat, ready to attack. The background is dark grey, almost black. “This was unexpected”, you think. A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a little monster sitting on the shoulder of a person in a green top. The monster is grasping the person’s ear, and is grinning with a wide pointy-toothed smile. It is dark, and the monster is horned, has long orange fur, huge glowing eyes, purple hands and feet (that also look like hands) with long orange claws, and they are perched neatly, knees against their chest, with one thane on their knee, the other pulling on the person’s ear. This is a representation of the “devil on my shoulder”, a naughty creature that wants me to do naughty things, like hiding all the spoons (I’m in my 50s, committing actual evil is way too much work). My monster is snuggly, and is friends with the other voices in my head, especially Clive. They have a lot in common.

Snails:

And then, there are those days when you’re drawing a toad, but somehow it turns into an alien. It’s cool. Toadally cool. *ahem*
A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a very squat purple toad alien. It wasn’t meant to be an alien, but something happened, and this was the result. The metallic purple paint highlights seemed logical after that, as did the red metallic eyes with yellow irises and sideways black pupils in the toad’s very large eyes. The smile was intentional. This is a very happy purple alien toad. Above the toad’s back is written “toadally confident in my weird”, with a gold star at each end, and surrounded by red metallic dots. Reference: 19th century botanical toad prints, but it’s kind of moot at this point.
