Among many other points in this thorough blog post, I strongly agree with Mollick in suggesting that we should always start with our own ideas when using AI. open.substack.com/pub/oneusefu...

Looking for recommendations for online tutorials or courses on video editing. I use Camtasia, Snagit, and in the past, Screencast-o-Matic. Want to learn more about editing and better techniques. Doing this mainly for online classes in higher ed but also for professional development videos.

NPR receives $2-3M/year in federal funding.

PBS receives $80-85M.

The military-themed birthday parade Trump is throwing himself will cost taxpayers $92M.

We’re told cutting news and kids programming to fund an authoritarian birthday bash somehow “makes America great again”

Musk, who recently said, "The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy," is like a botched first draft of a human being. Had I bought a Tesla a few years ago, I'd sure as hell want to get rid of it. But would that make any difference? I mean, for every seller, there's a buyer, right?

Highly recommend this podcast episode taking a nuanced and complex look at AI detection tools teachinginhighered.com/podcast/a-bi... loved it because it goes beyond the “can I trust these tools?” conversation to focus on how to have these convos with students on AI & ethical use @tihe.bsky.social

Focusing on policy around AI use and academic integrity without prioritizing space for faculty to learn about AI and think critically about learning objectives is like trying to be healthy solely by taking medicine. We won’t be healthy if we don’t make time to learn and engage with each other.

Fascinated by the “Intro to” courses that are popping up on TikTok based on Dr. Barlow’s African and African American Studies class. She posted a video as a welcome to her students, but 1000s of people started calling themselves her student online. Then she opened up to sharing with everyone 1/3

Attending #AACU conference for the first time in person and really looking forward to sessions on AI :)
How will #highered navigate AI’s potential in 2025? AAC&U Senior Scholar José Antonio Bowen tells insidehighered.com, “the key is recognizing where #AI might be able to support faculty work to create more time for the human relationships with students.” www.insidehighered.com/news/tech-in...
How will AI influence higher ed in 2025?
No one knows for sure, but Inside Higher Ed asked seven experts for their predictions.

This is Anna Mill's latest blog post on Grammarly's Authorship. I am not a Grammarly fan, but I am curious to see what this does or if it can help.

I tried Grammarly Authorship and largely like it though I hope for certain changes

Two posts by @annamillsoer.bsky.social have inspired me to set up a test of Grammarly's Authorship. Do any of you here use it? The concept of transparency in writing with AI is one that both intrigues and challenges me.

Today I had an opportunity to chat with a colleague doing research on group work in online classes in higher ed. Seems like we often avoid it. What would you say are challenges? What helps?

“All jobs are climate justice jobs” is something I first heard from Karen Costa. It gives me hope to do what I can as a teacher. Excited for this event on 1/8!
Great news. The Climate Circle at AASHE will be returning for the spring 2025 semester. We'll meet for 30 minutes the first Wednesday of the month from 1pm to 1:30pm ET, except for January when we'll meet on January 8th.
All are welcome.

While I've enjoyed using Research Rabbit and Elicit as what feels like "Google Scholar on steroids," one thing I like about Google Scholar is 1) getting notifications on topics I've chosen to follow, 2) accessing profiles of scholars on GS -helpful to verify made up sources by ChatGPT.

So happy that Civics of Technology @civicsoftech.bsky.social are here and even have an event tonight!

Learned about them as a recommendation in this episode on undergraduate research: teachinginhighered.com/podcast/a-lo...

Do I know anyone here who has adopted curricula on this topic?

Hopeful about this space after finding so many inspiring educators I interacted with on Twitter. Glad to be here! These last couple of years @tihe.bsky.social interviews have kept me feeling connected to many of you.

Telling me your shiny, new, expensive tool is teacher-proof is the only red flag I need to end a conversation immediately. It's an insult. Tools are nothing without teachers who can facilitate thoughtful use that pushes kids to think critically, ask questions & solve big problems. #EduSky
