Proof of concept? The allegedly duplicated images were meant to illustrate how the researchers altered levels of a protein called gelsolin with a viral vector.

A 2009 paper reported that gelsolin reduced amyloid burden in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. Now the journal’s editors have retracted the work over potential image duplication.
