Excluding an entire cohort nationwide from one of the biggest graduate fellowships in the country is so disheartening and such a disservice to the future of science.

This announcement coming one month before the deadline (also announced just a month early) is barring so many qualified applicants
I hate this for the second years who had already been working on applications.

Also the USDA fellowship RFA has still not been issued for this year.

It is harder and harder to find fellowships to support the newest generation of scientists. 🧪

We are shortchanging our future.
NSF GRFP solicitation out.
App deadlines now in November.
As others noted, eligibility rules for current graduate students now exclude 2nd year grad students. See the solicitation - they’ve emphasized “first year” and “less than one academic year” in grad program.

A week later and prospective applicants are still awaiting the instructions for this year's #NSFGRFP. I checked in with NSF today and was told "I don’t have anything for you at the moment." #GradSchool
"We are so very late that many students will not be able to apply this year."

My latest story—about frustration over delays for NSF's graduate research fellowship program. #NSFGRFP #GradSchool @science.org

The first Masters student defense in the lab! Congrats to Aylha Pferschy!!
#NewPI 🧪

Her lab art contribution is her gel picture of the mutants she worked so hard to make 🧫 We keep a signed-by-her copy for us and sign one for her to take!

New from the Carter Lab!

Led by @bhuwanabbot.bsky.social, we sequenced almost twice as many complete genomes as were available for the endofungal Mycetohabitans genus.

Unsurprisingly, they are a little weird, giving us insight into endosymbiotic genome changes 🧬 🦠

So proud of Taylor's growth at UNC Charlotte and with our lab. Very awesome project that introduced 🐝 to our lab and expanded our fungi culture collection with local isolates.

So grateful for a PI who pushes me out of my comfort zone and suggested I volunteer to judge for our undergrad symposium. I was hesitant- I feel like I was just the undergrad giving the presentation! I learned a lot and it was nice to see what’s going on around the university. A great experience! 🧬🔬

The GRFP was already brutally competitive and underfunded given the talent applying.

To me, this is a clear snapshot of the reality we face, as we try to play the game without acknowledging how much the game has changed.
🚨 Not a drill: NSF GRFP results are NOW OUT!!!!!

But...good news and bad news.

👍 I'm *thrilled* for the grad students for whom getting this award will be life-changing, esp now.

👎 # of fellowships went down by 51%

(1000 this year vs. 2036 last year)

Going to recruitment events as a first year grad student is so crazy. Like that was me only a year ago and I’ve already come so far🥹
