Very pleased to have photographed an Otter today along the River Roding at Wanstead. Even just a few years ago I thought it wouldn’t be possible to witness this on a London river!

It rained heavily last night and so I woke up to find my river had turned dark grey/almost black with a sheen of oil stretching along its entire surface.

Road run off really looks like the next sewage scandal in the making. We are allowing a cocktail of damaging chemicals to wash into our rivers.

‘If the painting was nothing more than a realistic portrait of an 18th-century Black scholar in his study, that would be extraordinary enough. It’s the earliest such image in Western art, the first self-presentation of a Black person as an intellectual.’

Just had the most unexpected nature experience: opened my boat hatch to see an otter frolicking in the Roding, in the willow directly opposite.

Slightly hard to believe that there could be an otter in Barking, but I managed to get a video of what would appear to be the most urban otter in London!
