Students skipping class and still getting good grades? What’s next, waiting to start term papers until the night before they’re due? Attending lecture in pajamas?? Is there truly no limit to the moral decay of the modern liberal bourgeois?

“What do you mean, why's it got to be built? It's a bypass. You've got to build bypasses.”

-a different author of a different book

Very much enjoyed the launch of Ken Wilson’s “Walking the Bypass: Notes on Place from the Side of the Road”

As far as I’m concerned, the antifa decree was the final straw.

The only world in which a group defined exclusively by its opposition to fascism is a potential threat to the government is…

…drumroll please….

yeah.

I honestly don’t know what the relevant people are waiting for.

I’m relieved to see them taking action at all. Apparently, no one wants to grapple with the very serious and very real implications of what it means to have a fascist dictator in office.

I have signed copies of folklore and Lover. I was a big swiftie for a while.

I also had Running with Scissors and Films About Ghosts on CD back in the day, but those were unsigned. Alas.

If you’re asking whether I have a vinyl collection, two turntables, and a microphone, the answer is, alas, no — I have never been that cool.

If you’re asking whether I have signed copies of at least two of them, the answer is yes.

Nobody has commented either way so far, so I think I’m probably not being hostile enough.

Is the proposal to make these cheese plus candy, potato plus candy holidays, or are we subtracting candy and replacing with cheese and potato? This is important.

I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is a complete overhaul of the overarching theoretical framework.

I wonder if all these “lonely men” realize that the scorn their culture heaps on the very idea of enjoying sex with a man is *probably* not improving their odds of getting laid.

I bet a lot of them would be perfectly happy just having sex with each other if they understood it as an actual option.

(One of these days, perhaps, I will stop reading the field of academic psychology for filth. Today is not that day.)

Why I Don’t Teach the Hidden Curriculum:

Did you know that "Stockholm Syndrome" is actually adopting the fawn response as a survival strategy?

Just thought that was useful information.

It’s a great question and unfortunately way too much to try to unpack within a social media character limit, but I’m referring specifically to academic psychology as a field.
laurenshallion.bsky.social
Academic psychology has a lot of hidden curriculum, some of which is weaponized in service of maintaining hierarchy, and all of which is at odds with our stated scientific values (transparency, straightforwardness)

When preserving in-group is favored over those values, we have some ‘splaining to do
laurenshallion.bsky.social
Hidden curriculum can mean a lot of things, but I’m referring here to a set of unstated expectations used to signal professional cachet within an in-group.

It’s important to know they exist, but far better in my opinion to examine and critique vs. enforce them.

Props though for the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt reference. I made the theme song the opener on an anti-patriarchy playlist years ago, well before I had any sense of the structure or how it connected.

When I was going through my academic abuse, I would have been terrified to even click on this link out of fear of reprisal.

Thank you, so much — personally, and especially on behalf of those afraid to say it — for your courage and advocacy.

A dialectic! On the one hand, go Eranda! On the other hand, what are we supposed to do with null findings? Tell traumatized people who’ve found strength and meaning in the aftermath of a terrible experience that on average, no they haven’t? The data aren’t strong enough for that level of arrogance.
laurenshallion.bsky.social
Same. Most of us got into this field because we’re obsessive about ideas. It’s not organic for us to toggle between modes.

But the professional ethics piece adds an extra layer of complication, because which activities count as professional? I love my job, but don’t want to owe it my entire life.
laurenshallion.bsky.social
And, I was not only ultimately tenured, but recruited away with tenure.

Which makes me not just a woman academic, but a woman academic survivor with academic freedom, a cushy office with a view, and — on rare and special occasions — a vendetta that doubles as a research direction.

Priceless.
laurenshallion.bsky.social
Real talk: I came very close to not going up for tenure — not submitting my materials, walking away from academia entirely — because I was so attuned to the threat of being pushed out. (#MeToo, so there was a price on my head). My chair talked me down, and I’m glad she did, but the struggle is real.
