Because of that work, there were major repairs, real accountability for landlords, and safe housing for two dozen families who had been ignored for years. One resident told us: “No one was paying attention to us until Capital B showed up.”

Here’s what that looks like: In Atlanta, our reporting on dangerous conditions at a federally funded apartment complex — collapsing ceilings, sewage leaks, mold — sparked a yearlong investigation.

Capital B is here to close that gap. A key pillar of our three-year plan is simple and urgent: Journalism That Changes Lives. That’s not a slogan. It’s our mandate.

For some much-needed real talk amid all the optimism for the future: Any big plan for a journalism org to serve Black communities in 2025 is facing major headwinds.

Our plan is to deepen local impact, strengthen journalism pipelines, and build a sustainable future. We’ll go in-depth on our strategy over the next six weeks, unpacking the why + how.

In just a few years, this approach to our reporting has sparked real change—spotlighting overlooked disaster survivors, uncovering hazardous drinking water, improving conditions for tenants, and inspiring civic action. Impact, not just impressions.

Capital B is both a mirror and a window.

A mirror that reflects the truths and lived experiences of Black communities—authentically and with integrity. A window that offers a trusted view into those realities, connecting people through honest storytelling.

When we launched Capital B in 2022, we were 9 people with a big vision: bring more, better news to communities too often under-covered or misrepresented. Today we’re 30 strong with two local newsrooms + a national desk—and we’ve learned tons about our strengths and challenges.

We’ve done so much in three years. But now, amid a powerful movement to denigrate and erase Black individuals’ and communities’ unique contributions to the US, and the truth about the systemic inequities we face — there’s so much more to do.

We’ve hosted candidate forums for local races, launched a print product and text messaging service, and toured every battleground state in advance of the ‘24 election.

Our work’s pushed FEMA to visit a forgotten Black neighborhood after a hurricane; gotten HUD to fix horrible living conditions in a housing complex; put nat’l spotlight on a shocking story of racism against a small town’s 1st Black mayor; helped ppl find food; doctors, and other resources; and more
