the point is education as a class-marker, you respect it as a shibboleth of someone you're supposed to recognise is in the same club as you or else tug your forelock to but that is precisely the reason it should not be available to the lower orders

tories have this duality where they will thunder about humanities degrees being rip-off waste of time but will tell starry-eyed how you Boris Johnson is a genius because he memorised the first six lines of the Iliad in Greek, which you can in fact do without even knowing Greek

even within the EU I found BER weird. when i flew out of there last month there were tons of people on security and practically no passengers but it still took forever because the person on the scanner was squinting for ages at literally every bag then sending it off to the side for extra inspection

I'm guessing maybe? it had meringue on the top. I'm not convinced it's a combination. It reminds me of how when I was 4 or something I theorised that ketchup was good and ice cream was good so i had ketchup on ice cream and realised that good things don't necessarily combine...

I have loved working with this. I remember a medievalist once telling a lecture hall that medievalists who don't work with manuscripts are missing out on the most fun you can have with your clothes still on, and I have to say I agree 😁

it's ridiculous how some people seem to think the only possible reason to do a humanities phd is to become a tenured professor. i use the considerable fruits of my philological training all day every single day to overanalyse every word anyone says to or around me within an inch of its life
