Like it happens in the opposite direction too. I keep thinking about the people who boarded the Elden Ring hype train because their friends and socials were talking about it and they only got hyped by osmosis. Then ER comes out and they play it and realize it's absolutely not the game they wanted.

It's completely divorced from the actual game, which is why any kind of attempts to change people's hearts and minds are gonna fail. Because at this point it's about being part of the crowd than actually wanting to see if the game is good or not.

It's just schoolyard stuff. You hear a rumor about someone in school and just end up believing it for no other reason than because your buddy told you something.

I doubt a third of the game's haters have even watched the initial trailer, or even The Game Awards. They saw their friends make fun of it and got in on "the joke."
