This summer when we visit Los Angeles for the World Science Fiction Convention, you can plan to make a detour to the Paley Centre For Media to see this long-forgotten Hugo Finalist!

But due to copyright concerns, there are numerous items in their archives that they do not put on the open web. In fact, they only way they allow anyone to access Murder and the Android is through a visit to their media centre in Los Angeles!

The Paley Center does great work in archiving and preserving the history of public popular media in the United States. They help inform discussion about the cultural, creative, and social significance of television. They explore how media shapes public perception and society.

So the only remaining copy was the one at the NBC local affiliate in Los Angeles, who donated their archives to the Paley Center for Media.

Murder and the Android was only broadcast on three occasions, the last of which was in 1960.

That was at a time when nobody had a VCR to tape television episodes from broadcast …

Now here’s the thing. Every single Hugo-shortlisted short story, novel, novelette, or novella is available through the library. If your local library doesn’t have it, they can bring it in via inter-library loan.

And other than this one movie, every dramatic presentation can be found for sale.

Bester himself wrote the script for the television play, and the piece was helmed by journeyman director Alex March who pulled together a pretty rock solid group of actors. A very young Rip Torn (Dodgeball, Robocop 3, Freddy Got Fingered) plays the titular android!

For those who haven’t read the story on which it’s based, Fondly Fahrenheit is about an android accused of murder. Reading it – with its shifting viewpoints and unreliable narration – it’s difficult to imagine how it was adapted for the screen. It’s a work about mental illness & about identity

It was shortlisted for the Hugo Award in 1960, and later that year, Frederick Pohl called it “almost the only first-rate television play on a science fiction theme.”

Broadcast on November 8, 1959 as part of NBC’s Sunday Showcase, it’s a television movie based on Alfred Bester’s story Fondly Fahrenheit, and one that is by all accounts quite a good hour of television.

Of all the works ever shortlisted for a Hugo Award, possibly the most difficult to read or watch is Murder and the Android.

Your best opportunity to watch it will be during LAcon V next summer in Los Angeles.

The story about it is utterly wild. Strap in.

The Frank Gehry-designed Disney Concert Hall is a space-age design that's been used as a stand-in for Stark Enterprises in Iron Man and the Confederacy of Earth's Presidential Palace in the alternate universe of Star Trek Picard, among other fantastical places.

With its distinctive white accoustic tiles & arched design, the 2nd Street Tunnel in Downtown Los Angeles excudes science fictionality, which has led to its use in a wide variety of iconic SFF movies including Blade Runner (1982), The Terminator (1984), & Independence Day (1996).

Slightly north of the city of Los Angeles, you'll find science fiction's most famous outcropping: Vasquez Rocks.

You'll recognize it as the location where James T. Kirk fought a Gorn in Star Trek the Original Series, and where Bill and Ted fought their evil android duplicates in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.
