I think that bit really aligns with the work you are already doing, and also @jkom.bsky.social, around vendors.

The heavy use of AI will land mainly in the most cash-strapped universities, the ones least able to sustain rich, human-centred teaching and genuine staff-student relationships.
lawriephipps.co.uk
Into this gap steps AI! Sold to us not just as a useful tool, but as a “saviour” that will cut costs, keep courses running and maintain research.

Short term, AI looks like a fix: fewer staff, more automation, and promise of efficiency. Vendors get moral cover; critics are painted as anti-progress.

The paradox: governments say universities are “autonomous” and step back (like in the UK), but politics still bites, such as big research cuts in the US. Both paths leave universities exposed.

Universities in many countries are in serious financial trouble. The long talk of a permacrisis is actually here. Leaders who expected endless growth now face tougher markets, shrinking funds and more political pressure.

Appreciate Chris Thomson's reflections on our Banford workshop at #RIDLHE last month. We did joke that we were the "theater kids" at the conference, &it seems we were correct. Glad Chris also took us seriously, as we are trying to do serious things: inspiringlearning.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2025/10/l...

(It's a 2 parter; double the fun!) 2 activities at a recent conference demonstrated how using creative writing & fiction could help explore complex issues in education. inspiringlearning.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2025/10/l...

you and I have seen that practice at all levels over the last 20 years - it never changes.

There is also a lot of reactionary strategy, the current hype around AI has resulted in a lot of "hope over experience" strategies.

"Oxford becomes first UK university to offer ChatGPT Edu to all staff and students" - imagining a lot of staff there pretty upset about, but also it says much about OpenAI's education strategy that it's targeted Oxford as its first institutional capture in the UK www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-09...
