Grandparents don’t have automatic rights to contact with grandchildren in the UK, but they CAN apply to court if contact breaks down. Courts often see the value of children maintaining wider family relationships where safe and appropriate

Going to court doesn’t always mean a dramatic courtroom scene. Many hearings are paperwork-based, done remotely, or focused on negotiation between solicitors. The goal is resolution, not conflict or “winning.”

Domestic abuse isn’t only physical. UK law recognises controlling and coercive behaviour, financial abuse and emotional harm. Support and protective orders are available, and you don’t need to wait for an emergency to seek advice.

Parental responsibility means being involved in decisions about education, health and religion. Mothers automatically have it; fathers usually get it if married to the mother or named on the birth certificate after 2003 in England & Wales.

If you live together without marrying, you are NOT “common-law spouses” in the UK. That’s a myth. Cohabiting partners don’t have the same legal rights as married couples, especially around property. Planning ahead can protect both of you. Cohabitation Agreements are just one way.

Mediation isn’t about “giving in”, it’s a structured way to reach agreement without long court battles. UK family courts expect most separating couples to consider mediation before applying to court, unless there are safety concerns.

Financial settlements in divorce aren’t automatically 50/50. Courts look at needs, earning capacity, childcare responsibilities and housing security. Every situation is unique, and negotiation or mediation can often avoid court altogether.

Did you know a Child Arrangements Order doesn’t “award custody”? The terms “custody” and “access” aren’t used in UK law anymore. Courts talk about where the child lives and when they spend time with each parent. Language matters a lot in family cases.

In the UK, you can divorce without blaming your partner. “No-fault divorce” means you only need to show the relationship has broken down irretrievably, removing conflict and hostility from the legal process.

Co-parenting after separation isn’t just about schedules it’s about supporting your child’s routine, emotional wellbeing and relationships. UK courts prioritise a child’s best interests in any arrangement, not parental “rights.” #seperation

Pets are increasingly viewed as members of the family, but the law doesn’t always see them the same way.
Does California Have Pet Custody Laws?
Pet custody is an evolving legal area. A few states have legislation to distinguish pets from other assets and to protect their rights.

The court won’t ask children to ‘pick a parent.’ Their wishes matter, but only as one part of a bigger picture: safety, stability, schooling, routines, and emotional well-being

Once had a client who thought mediation was ‘weak.’ They left the process with a better agreement than they ever could have got in court.

Most people don’t realise how normal it is to feel overwhelmed during a divorce. You’re not failing: the system is complex and emotional. The best thing you can do is take decisions one step at a time

A common UK family law myth: ‘Mothers always get custody.’

This isn’t true.

Courts start from the child’s best interests, not parental gender.

Shared care is increasingly common, where safe and appropriate

When a mother fleeing violence faces criminal charges for trying to keep her children safe, something is deeply wrong. Laws must protect the vulnerable

The profit motive should have no place in any provision of care, healthcare or social care.

When it does, it is often the most vulnerable who pay the price for #privatisation.
