Right now, a drug intended to address one medical cause of kidney failure in Black Americans is in Phase 3 clinical trials -- meaning it's in its testing on humans era. Doctors and researchers told me that medical breakthrough is a direct result of analyzing decades of govt. race and ethnicity data.

That means the government collects and stores data on every kidney failure patient data in the U.S.

Doctors and researchers told me there's no easy replacement for federal government data. And that data has been used to launch medical breakthroughs for African Americans.

Second, one doctor told me nephrology is "the only socialized medicine program in the states."

If you're a U.S. citizen diagnosed with kidney failure and you've paid into Medicare, you're automatically eligible for Medicare treatment coverage, regardless of your age.

This is important for a few reasons. First, Black people make up just 13% of the U.S. population, but account for 1/3 of all kidney failure diagnoses. Race MATTERS in nephrology.

4/ they account for roughly a third of dialysis patients. Some of that may be accounted for disparate access to health care earlier in life. But it seems clear there is a genetic component. And there are studies now zeroing in on how to grapple with that improve and improve health outcomes.

3/ disease. Because the whole population is in the system. The other fact is that African-Americans suffer from end stage kidney disease at dramatically higher rates than the rest of the population. @laylaayanna.bsky.social reports that while African-Americans make up ~13% of the US population ...

2/ It's a fascinating and intricate set of interconnections. End stage kidney care (dialysis) is basically the only part of health care in the US covered entirely by the federal govt. In addition to the health care provision that creates a critical source of data about people with end stage kidney..

“It’s a project of demolition."
